The First Corn Harvest of the Year

The day has finally came where I harvested the corn at the right time and now can enjoy there summer taste.  I had checked them during the week and waited until they were just right.  It happened to be yesterday where I went outside and started picking all the ears that were ripe and ready for the dinner table.

I collected 24 ears yesterday and they weighed about 15 pounds in total which is I think is great for the first corn crop of the season.  Some of them had some caterpillars that were eating the kernels, but other than that there was no serious damage which is also a good thing to hear. (more…)

Large Cucumbers and Steakhouse Tomato

Today was a good day while harvesting some cucumbers, tomatoes, and even another zucchini.  Earlier in the season when I first picked up some of these fruits and vegetables they were not as big as I had hoped.  The only exception being the zucchinis which were extremely larger than normal.

The cucumbers were small and the plants did not look like they were going to produce that much for the season.  I also had high hopes for the steakhouse tomatoes because the first few that were picked definitely gave me confidence that I would be getting much more in the near future. (more…)

Harvested One Tote of Onions and Two More Tomatoes

Today was a warm day and after about a couple of weeks of my onion bulbs falling over I decided that it was time to pick them from the totes.  I only do one tote at first to see if they are ready and are not beginning to rot or become infested with maggots.  Once I inspect them and they seem good to be eaten then I work on the other totes.

I didn’t do all the totes today because some plants were still in the process of falling over.  Picking them too soon is just as bad as picking them too late.  I will most likely get the rest of them tomorrow.  It’s a very simple process and if you do them in totes they come out of the soil incredibly easy without having to use a shovel and dig them out. Corn May Be Coming Soon To My Garden

It was only a couple of days ago that the tassels began to grow from my corn and it looked like that I was going to get some corn in the near future.  I went outside today and discovered that there were some silks appearing from one of the corn stalks.  This was the first sign that I could be getting corn in a week or so.

Granted this was only one corn stalk, but it signaled that my corn was growing correctly and I have been doing something right.  I would be very surprised if this was the only stalk that began growing ears of corn. (more…)

July 28 Garden Progress Update

It has been a while since I last wrote a post on this blog and I thought it would be good to give you a quick update on what is happening so far.  I now have four pumpkins that are growing in the garden and I may have a fifth one coming soon.  I have been taking pictures of them so that I can easily see their progress over a short period of time.

As you know my zucchinis are coming in one after the other and I don’t see any sign of them slowing down.  Blueberries are starting to wind down and today I think I reached the peak of the blueberry season for this year.  Tomatoes are doing good and will be ripening very shortly as long as the warm weather holds up. Three Zucchinis Picked and Some Blueberries Too

Today I had the opportunity to pick three more zucchinis that were well past ready and they are some of the biggest I have ever grown.  Two of them were about normal size while one of them I could barely hold it in one hand because of its large diameter.  It weighed five and half pounds which ended up being the heaviest zucchini that I have ever picked.  There are others that will be picked very soon as well.

Blueberries were picked recently and after a few more days with lots of sun many more blueberries were ready to be harvested again.  The ones that were close to ready the first time have now been picked on this second time.  I collected about a pound and a half this time.  There is still plenty out there which I can use to make some delicious desserts. First Blueberry Harvest and Two More Zucchinis Picked

Today wasn’t such a busy day after all the rain we received yesterday from what was left of hurricane Arthur.  The entire garden received enough water for at least a few days and this is one less thing that I have to worry about.  The day before this large rainstorm (which was desperately needed) I was able to start the first harvest of blueberry season.

Blueberries are one of my favorite fruits and you can do quite a bit with them with some great recipes.  This first batch was not that big and I probably can’t do much with the amount that I harvested.  The first picking is usually the smallest as well as the last of the season.  In the next couple of weeks more bushes will ripen and I will pick more so that I will be able to use them and enjoy them for as long as possible. Finished Weeding Entire Garden and Picked First Zucchini

Sorry I have not written in quite a while but it has been incredibly busy around here.  I have spent the entire past week just weeding throughout the entire garden including blueberries and strawberries.  Weeds are a constant problem and more nuisance than anything else.

The good news is that after spending each and every day weeding the entire garden area I can now focus on caring for my plants.  Although weeding will continue throughout the rest of the season even if we get rain or not.  I will just have to make sure not to let the weeds grow wild before removing them or place a thick mulch around the worst areas.              (more…)

Complete Weeding of Garden and Last of Tomatoes Planted

The past two days have been quite busy especially with all the weeding I had to do through the entire garden.  The bad thing about getting rain is all the weeds that grow real fast around the plants.  If you do not keep an eye on your plants these weeds can easily overpower any plant making for a real poor harvest.

Not only was I able to get most of the weeding completed I even had time to finally plant the rest of the tomatoes into the ground.  They were part of the later crop, but they should be able to produce enough tomatoes with the time that they should have left in the season. (more…)

Progress of Zucchini and Tomatoes

I wanted to keep you informed on the status of everything that I am growing in the garden which includes all vegetables, fruits, and flowers that I have added into the ground.  So far the only two plants that are producing include the zucchini and tomatoes.  They just happen to be the first of the season and soon I will have beans, cucumbers, cantaloupes, and many more with flowers.

The blueberries are on their way to harvest time with just some more sun they will soon be ready to be picked.  It doesn’t look like I have as much as I did last year, but I still think I will have a descent harvest for 2014.  While the blueberries are getting started the strawberries are finally winding down for now.  With a little care they will come back during the summer and at the end of the season harvest.
