Carrots and Ruby Glow Lettuce Harvest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have been pretty much weeding the entire garden this week and I wanted to wait until I completed that before writing another post, but instead I will give you a quick update on the garden instead.<\/p>\n<p>I started with picking some of my Ruby glow lettuce earlier in the week and that was very exciting since last year I didn&#8217;t get as much as I would have liked.\u00a0 The first harvest I had from them yielded me 65 leaves.\u00a0 This is just short from my iceberg lettuce harvest.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The leaves were not quite as large as my iceberg lettuce, but they still are perfect for using in sandwiches.\u00a0 They are just as delicious and are much more healthier than the normal green leaves picked a couple weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Picture-1-014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since the weather was getting a little bit warmer especially for lettuce I decided on adding mulch around all the plants.\u00a0 This helps when I water them and keeps the soil cool throughout the day and is very good at retainer water until the next day when I water the garden.<\/p>\n<p>I just wanted to show you one of the plants that I picked before and after a small harvest of their leaves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Picture-1-012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can probably tell that there are plenty of leaves that I could have picked, but since this is a first for them I wanted to be on the conservative side and only pick a few on the bottom that were ready.<\/p>\n<p>Once I was done with all my lettuce I decided to finally work on my carrots that needed to be weeded and thinned out.\u00a0 Carrots are one of the hardest to weed and thin out because when they start they are very small and can be easily confused with weeds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Picture-1-064.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1428\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have to take the best carrot plant and remove the rest in order to thin them out correctly.\u00a0 It is very tough when they are this close together as well as removing the weeds that are around them.<\/p>\n<p>It probably took about a few hours in order to weed my carrots and remove the ones that I didn&#8217;t need.\u00a0 Luckily I was able to accomplish this and I think I did a pretty good job despite all the seeds that had sprouted this season.<\/p>\n<p><a sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I took several sprouts and brought it down to just a single one.\u00a0 I did this throughout the entire row and eventually finished with the thinning of my carrot plants.<\/p>\n<p>I think next on the list would be picking some more iceberg lettuce that happens to be looking very good with extra large leaves.\u00a0 I would like to
