the First of My Fall Kale Crop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now that it is October and fall is officially here it is time to start focusing on my cooler weather plants.\u00a0 Today was a great day for picking kale and most of the plants had very large leaves that needed to be harvested right away.<\/p>\n<p>I am pretty much done with my summer plants and again the last thing that is out there is the last watermelon that I need to pick.\u00a0 I will be picking it before the weekend so make sure to check back and find out when I finally harvest this last melon.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This year my kale is growing quite fast and probably with the rain this past weekend that definitely helped it quite a bit.\u00a0 I picked a total of 37 leaves which doesn&#8217;t sound like much, but these were very large leaves which is perfect for kale soup.\u00a0 This is the best meal that I can make out of them and is great for those cold winter months.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2690.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1674\" src=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2690-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Large Kale Leaf\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2690-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2690-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2690-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can see from the photo above that these leaves were quite huge and with only 37 of these leaves picked that makes this a good first harvest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2686.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1675\" src=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2686-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"First Harvest of Kale\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" of broccoli beginning to grow.\u00a0 The center part of the plant is producing fruit and this is a little early for them, but again I think the rain this weekend help it out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2638.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1676\" src=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2638-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"First Signs of Broccoli\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2638-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2638-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2638-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Along with my broccoli and kale I am also growing cabbage which also looks pretty good at the moment.\u00a0 It looks like some caterpillars got at some of the leaves and going through it is the best way to remove these pests and insects.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2641.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1677\" src=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2641-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Cabbage Plants\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" 768w, http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2641-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some more peppers were picked today and these plants are still growing quite well and keep producing flowers.\u00a0 I am not sure how much longer they will last especially when the cold weather comes, but for now I am going to keep harvesting these vegetables.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2712.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone sized peppers even at this stage of the garden season.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2716.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" on my pepper plants are continuing to grow and this possibly means more peppers in the future.<\/p>\n<p><a decided that it was time to finally pick all my pumpkins.\u00a0 I like to pick them during this month because I can then use them for Halloween which is the main reason I grow these vegetables.\u00a0 I have a total of seven, but I picked the last six today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2753.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1681\" src=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2753-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Last Pumpkin Harvest\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_2753-300x200.jpg 300w, sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All I have left is the last watermelon, carrots, and my fall crop in the garden.\u00a0 Watermelon will be picked this week, my carrots
