{"id":2347,"date":"2019-03-25T15:49:10","date_gmt":"2019-03-25T19:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/?p=2347"},"modified":"2019-03-25T15:50:10","modified_gmt":"2019-03-25T19:50:10","slug":"tomato-seeds-indoors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/tomato-seeds-indoors\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Tomato Seeds Set in Plastic Containers for a May Planting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><p>The month of March is when I like to do the bulk of my seed planting indoors which I started to do earlier in the month with <a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/spring-seeds-indoors\/\">my cool weather crop<\/a>.  I also like to plant my tomatoes early as well because they are simple to transplant and easy to plant into plastic containers.  This past weekend I planted all the tomato seeds that I purchased this season into recycled plastic cups.<\/p><!--more--><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This season I am growing two new types of tomatoes instead of the usual steakhouse and supersauce that I have been growing for some time.  I am keeping the supersauce since it happens to be a great way for making sauce, but I am growing different types of beefsteak tomatoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG_2383-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Tomato seed packets of supersteak hybrid and big boy hybrid.\" class=\"wp-image-2348\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG_2383-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG_2383-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG_2383-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG_2383-700x467.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I decided on choosing Burpee\u2019s super beefsteak and big boy tomatoes for the year.  Many years ago I had big boy tomatoes in the garden and they seemed to be quite reliable and decided that this year I would go back to planting them.  The super beefsteak is just a larger than normal beefsteak tomato, but not as large as the steakhouse tomatoes I have grown in previous years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I planted the super beefsteak and big boy tomatoes into three containers hoping that I can get at least three plants of each of them.  I can\u2019t forget about cherry tomatoes because these are my favorite and I planted Chadwick cherry seeds into four plastic containers.  I think four plants of cherry tomatoes is enough to get a decent harvest.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the supersauce seeds I ended up planting them into thirty containers.  This is more than previous years and usually I just stick to 25 or so.  The packet of seeds I received had a little more than 25 that are usually in these packets so I decided on going with thirty seeds instead of 25.  Maybe this year I will have more tomatoes for sauce making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since I ran out of room on the windowsill I had to place all of them under fluorescent lights.  I do this every year for my tomatoes anyways.
