Most of my plants were becoming pot bound and the roots could not grow any further. I used plastic cups for these plants and this will give them plenty of room for the roots to grow until it is time to put them into the ground.

Since my last post I have started planting watermelons, cantaloupe, and a couple of different types of cucumbers. The only melons that I didn’t plant were my honeydew melon seeds. I didn’t have enough room on the plant tray that I was using and I will have to find some room once I start placing my flowers outside when the weather gets better.

I decided on using large peat pots for my melons and medium sized ones for my cucumbers. Cucumbers do not need much space when it comes to containers and that is why I elected not to use the large ones. My melons on the other hand need space to grow and since I had larger ones this season I wanted to plant my melon seeds into them. They are sprouting underneath some fluorescent lights at the moment.

This season I also changed the way I will be planting my carrot seeds. I usually just make a row in the garden and throw some seeds into it hoping that they will sprout. This method was definitely not efficient because sometimes they would grow, but most of the time they wouldn’t.

Instead I will be using small peat pots for growing my carrots. This seems like the best way to get carrots to sprout and plant them in the garden without disturbing the roots too much. After all the root is what you will be eating when it is harvest time. With this in mind I am also hoping to have two harvest of carrots depending on how well these peat pots work.

My grape plants and my raspberry plants have started sprouting and are growing leaves.
