{"id":817,"date":"2015-05-02T16:38:15","date_gmt":"2015-05-02T20:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/?p=817"},"modified":"2015-05-02T16:38:15","modified_gmt":"2015-05-02T20:38:15","slug":"spinach-harvest-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/spinach-harvest-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"First Spinach Harvest For 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today was the first spinach harvest of this year and I was able to collect a few spinach leaves that were ready for consumption.\u00a0 Spinach leaves last quite a while as long as you leave them in the fridge or cool area.<\/p>\n<p>I had a couple of plants that did not transplant well and ended up bolting rather early.\u00a0 Sometimes this does happen, but with approximately twenty plants this is not so bad.\u00a0 I still have plenty left that are producing large leaves and others that are continuing to produce.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Picture-1-026.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-818\" src=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Picture-1-026-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Spinach Leaves Harvested\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Picture-1-026-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Picture-1-026.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The leaves were not too bad in terms of size, but I always like to have very large crinkling spinach leaves.\u00a0 They are still great to place in salads and I can use them for a spinach and tomato sandwich.\u00a0 Instead of using lettuce I use spinach.<\/p>\n<p>I cut about three to four leaves from the healthiest plants that I had.\u00a0 Most of them came from the <a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/spinach-transplanted-onions-sprouting\/\">first spinach transplants<\/a>.\u00a0 The others I will pick when they are ready.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the plants before and after I picked the leaves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Picture-1-011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-819\" src=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Picture-1-011-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Spinach Plant Before Harvesting\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Picture-1-011-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Picture-1-011.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After I harvested the spinach plants I placed a layer of manure around the plants as you can see from the photo below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Picture-1-047.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-820\" src=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Picture-1-047-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Spinach Plant After Harvesting\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Picture-1-047-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ericsorganicgarden.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Picture-1-047.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since spinach are heavy feeders especially on nitrogen it is important to provide them with the necessary food to produce large and dark green leaves.<\/p>\n<p>So far everything seems to be going pretty good and I have planted more seeds in the past week.\u00a0 Some more melons, watermelons, peppers, cucumbers, cilantro, dill, and alyssum have been planted.<\/p>\n<p>I also separated some of the tomato and squash plants as well.\u00a0 I usually would just thin them out, but because of a low tomato and squash sprouting rate I decided to separate them instead of removing them from the soil.<\/p>\n<p>Onions are doing pretty well in both the garden and totes and will probably start feeding them very soon as well since they require fertilizer as well.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today was the first spinach harvest of this year and I was able to collect a few spinach leaves that were ready for consumption.\u00a0 Spinach leaves last quite a while as long as you leave them in the fridge or cool area.
