June Bearing Strawberries Ready for Picking

The gardening season is upon us and with June having just arrived this also means June bearing strawberries are beginning to ripen. Now that these strawberries have turned color it is time to start picking them and enjoy their sweet flavor. This marks the very first harvest for the year. I have many other plants that will need to be harvested and I will discuss that in this article.

I finally got my corn seeds into the ground a couple of weeks ago and they have been taking advantage of the rain we had in the latter part of May. Most of the seeds I had planted actually sprouted which is a good sign. Now that they have sprouted it is time to thin them out. I have two rows of corn with a little over twenty plants in each.

The only thing I have harvested this season are my strawberries. I actually could have harvested my lettuce plants which are growing quite well. I could harvest both my green lettuce plants and some from my red lettuce plants. Today is raining so I will probably start picking them sometime this week on a cool crisp morning.

My potato plants actually sprouted this season and the plants are getting quite big. The roots from these plants are coming out of the soil which is normal and I have to cover them up with some loose soil. They are progressing at the moment and I am definitely looking to digging up some Yukon gold potatoes.

I still have plenty of things to plant including squash, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, beans, carrots, eggplants, melons, and much more. Many of these I have transplants for and others I will have to plant directly into the soil. I am a little bit later than usual due to weather and other circumstances, but I am hoping to have all my plants into the garden before the middle of June.
