Looking Towards a Fresh Spring Start

Last updated on

This year I hope to be an interesting one with a few new plants that I am going to try out for the first time. I plan on having a larger than normal spring crop with plenty of plants including spinach, eight different types of lettuce, potatoes, peas, radishes, and maybe even some broccoli and many more. I haven’t planned it all out yet, but I am hoping to get all of these plants into the garden as soon as spring comes around and temps begin to rise.

As usual my flowers that are used to attract bees, insects, and other organisms were planted a couple of weeks ago indoors under lights and in windowsills. I have started placing dill, wildflowers, and alyssum into containers at this point. I will try to get more flowers planted indoors once the weather gets warmer and can start placing them outdoors.

I also wanted to get some spring crops ready for when it is time to start transplanting into the ground as early as possible. So far I have planted Bloomsdale long standing spinach, buttercrunch, white Paris, burgundy delight (red), black seeded Simpson, dynamite, king crimson (red), igloo, and Vivian lettuce seeds. I started them out in the cool basement and using fluorescent lights to get them started for now.

I mentioned in the beginning that I have some new seeds that I am going to be trying out this season. I bought some Carolina reaper and habanero peppers for the garden season. I thought it would be good to try out some of the hottest peppers to grow in the garden this year. I wanted to try them out last year, but didn’t have the chance and promised myself that I would grow them during 2020. This is a great way to start off a new decade of gardening.
