Update on Plant Progress So Far

Last updated on

I haven’t written a post in a little while and I thought I would give you an update on the progress of most of my plants as of today.  Some good news is that the weather is getting warmer and the sun is staying out later which is great for all my plants including the ones in the ground.

I have been placing my plants in containers outside to get them accustomed to the temperature differences.  This is the hardening process that can take a good couple of weeks.  From there I will be putting them in the ground.

Let’s first talk about my plants that are in the ground and onions that are inside of totes.  My spinach plants are not doing too bad and I think by the end of the week at the latest I will have my first spinach harvest.

Spinach Plants

Since I transplanted them into the ground I haven’t done anything except for giving them a little bit of lime and watering them.  I will have to go out there and loosen the soil a little bit in order for them to breathe.

The soil in this area has more clay than in other areas of the garden.  This could prevent water and nutrients from reaching the roots.  That is why I will have to tend to these plants more than my onions for example.

My onions on the other hand are starting to show signs of shoots springing from the bulbs.  The ones in the ground are still a little bit young, but I should see stems from them in a week or so.

The ones in the totes are doing quite well and a majority of them have small stems coming from the tops of the bulbs.  I am still keeping the screens on top until they get a little bigger and when all of them have stems.

It looks like the onion is a little exposed, but I can always cover them later on when the bulb begins to grow.  At the moment the roots are growing along with the new stems.

Now let’s start talking about my plants still in containers.  As you know I have many flowers that I like to grow and use to plant in the garden soon after tilling the entire garden.

Here are just the flowers that are being hardened outside as of today.

Multiple Flower Mix

In these two are several different kinds of plants.  One of them has the Burpee bees and butterfly garden mix (above) and the other has a variety of different alyssum and dill plants (below).  They are some of my best growing plants at the moment.

Next are both my royal carpet and carpet of snow alyssum plants.  I have five containers filled with alyssum plants.  Five is a good amount to start off with.

Also some of my alyssum plants have actually began to flower.  Many of them have buds and a few are showing there flowers.

The last plant for today is my ruby glow hybrid that has been outside for about a week or two.  These should be planted into the ground very soon once they get a little bit bigger and are ready for the garden soil.

I still have plants that have not been outside yet including most of my vegetable and fruit plants.  These will be place outside the next couple of days possibly because it is supposed to be in the low 70’s.   For now I only have my flowers and lettuce outside hardening up.
