The Start of April Means Planting Onions and Lettuce

Last updated on

Sunny skies and warm weather means it is time to start planting onions and some other cold weather plants including lettuce.  Although it is the beginning of April there still might be some cold days ahead.  All that is needed is some row covers to protect your plants from a late frost.

I wanted to get my onions done this past Saturday, but unfortunately it rained the entire day making this very difficult to accomplish.  Yesterday was not good because most of the soil was soggy and still kind of muddy.

Today on the other hand was quite warm and some of the soil had dried enough that I could work on it and get my onions into the soil.

It is also time to start planting some lettuce into the ground as well.  I only took the best plants that needed to be added to the garden right away before becoming pot bound.  It seems the best lettuce plants were the Butterhead types.  Soon all the others will be added into the soil once they reach a good size.

With warm weather it is a good time to take advantage of higher temperatures.  Plants need to harden off and that is why I placed my dill, alyssum, and wildflowers outside for the day.  At night I will bring them in because the nights are still too cool for them to be left outside all day.

My tomatoes are doing well and since they are of decent size I thought it would be helpful to give them sun in the windowsill.  This also goes for my eggplant, watermelons, cantaloupe, peppers, and cucumbers.

Now that I have two lights that are not being used I can start planting either more flowers or more fruits and vegetables.  I will most likely do half of each since I have two fluorescent lights that are not being utilized.
