Cucumbers and Onions are This Weeks Harvests

Cucumbers were one of the first summer plants added into the garden this season and it makes sense that I would start harvesting them in the beginning and middle of July. I have several vines with plenty of cucumbers on them so I should be harvesting many more of them throughout the month. The onion stems had fallen over and it was time to dig them up and getting dry. I like to dry them outside in the hot sun in order to use them as soon as possible. Storing them in a dry garage or basement is another way to dry them as well.

Following Onions Comes Eggplant and Broccoli Harvesting

It is now prime harvesting time with onions picked out of the totes and now broccoli, eggplants, more tomatoes, and beans are ready. At this moment I probably have picked every vegetable from the garden except for pumpkins which I picked much later and melons that will also come later in the season. I also started picking the second row of corn which is a all white type of corn. They looked very weird, but were actually quite delicious and didn’t taste that much different from any other corn I have grown.

Strawberry Harvest

Three Strawberry Harvests Completed This Year

I have finally placed all my plants into the ground with an exception of a couple which will be placed very soon before the end of June. The only successful harvest at the moment has been my strawberries. I have been picking some late broccoli as well, but these are just a few heads and florets. I have some good lettuce that I will start picking soon I just wanted to be sure that the leaves will not turn out bitter. I made certain to do a few consecutive watering with lime to sweeten the soil.

Potato harvesting

Getting Potatoes out of The Ground and Corn onto the Table

The past week or two has been quite busy with plenty of vegetables to be harvested and ready to eat. Last week I finished picking the rest of the onions that I had growing in the totes. Right now they are drying outside and once they are finished I will bring them inside count them and then weigh them. Along with onions I also decided to pick corn and dig up my potatoes.

A quick Update on Progress of Garden Plants and Soon to be Harvesting

This is just going to be a quick update on how everything in the garden is going and what are some of the upcoming harvests that will be coming from the garden in the next couple of weeks. At the moment I have been picking zucchini here and there and are the only vegetable that seems to ripen faster than all the others. My lettuce and peas seem to be done for the season and I will be replacing them with broccoli and possibly kale.

Lettuce Done Now on to Summer Plants Such as Tomatoes, Corn, and More

Now it is time to transition into summer growing crops because the spring crops are done for the season for the most part. Lettuce plants are beginning to bolt, potato plants are still growing but are showing signs that they will soon be ready for harvesting, and peas are producing very little if at all. So far I have only harvested two zucchinis from my summer harvests, but soon I will be picking more vegetables and fruit from my summer plants.

Planting In the Rain and Update on Outdoor Garden Plants

Sorry for the long period for a blog post, but I have plenty of things to discuss. This month has brought many rain storms and really windy days and made it difficult to till some of the garden soil and get some spring seeds planted. I finally had a good day to get the soil mixed this week and decided to plant peas, radishes, and sunflowers today even though it was cloudy, rainy, and windy. I couldn’t wait any longer to get these seeds into the ground.

Yellow Onion Bulbs in Bag

Getting in Front of a Rain Shower and Planting Onions into Totes

I always like to get my plants (in this case bulbs) into the ground before a possible rain storm or shower occurs. This is a good way for the bulbs to enjoy some natural rain water which they seem to respond positively to. It also gives them a good soaking which is a good way to conserve water.

Melons Appearing and Harvests are to be Made

It looks like many of my fruit and vegetables are starting to appear within the garden and some harvests will have to be done real soon. I have already harvested a zucchini last week and I have a few more in the garden that are just about done. I also have tomatoes that are beginning to turn and some corn that is just about ready for picking. Let’s discuss some of the harvests that I did this past week. (more…)

Soon To Be Harvests of Many Vegetables From the Garden

For the past couple of weeks I have been picking blueberries until the season is over for them. At the moment there are still plenty of berries left even though I have picked over ten pounds of them from this year’s harvests. Soon there will be harvests from my corn, zucchini, tomatoes, and possibly pumpkins and melons. (more…)
