Lettuce Done Now on to Summer Plants Such as Tomatoes, Corn, and More

Last updated on

Now it is time to transition into summer growing crops because the spring crops are done for the season for the most part. Lettuce plants are beginning to bolt, potato plants are still growing but are showing signs that they will soon be ready for harvesting, and peas are producing very little if at all. So far I have only harvested two zucchinis from my summer harvests, but soon I will be picking more vegetables and fruit from my summer plants.

I was able to pick some of the last lettuce from my plants last week and got a good amount of them. I picked several red lettuce leaves and plenty of green lettuce leaves as well. Although they are still growing they are now beginning to bolt which means they are pretty much done for the year.

Just the last harvest of red lettuce for 2019.

I still have to wait for my potatoes before I can harvest them, but very soon I should be digging them up for hopefully a good harvest. Some of the plants are brown which I can start digging up, but I am waiting for more plants to start to turn brown in order to dig up most of my potatoes.

Besides picking zucchini I think the next vegetables that will be harvested might be my tomatoes. I planted three different types of beefsteak tomatoes along with several cherry tomatoes and Roma tomatoes. At the moment I have a beefsteak tomato plant that is beginning to produce the first tomatoes of the season. Most of the plants have at least a few flowers to a large bunch of flowers which could become a tomato real soon.

Peppers are also getting flowers which means they might start producing fruit as well. They don’t usually take as long to ripen as tomatoes, but at the moment they only have flowers which is still a good sign for production soon.

Pepper flowers now producing and hopefully peppers will come along real soon.

Some of my onions are actually ready for harvesting now that the stems are beginning to fall over. My yellow onions are doing quite well, but my red onions seem to be ready for harvesting. I will probably be picking them from the soil real soon. I would say within the next week or so they will be picked from the totes.
