Time To Make Tomato Sauce with Roma Tomatoes

Last updated on

I collected quite a bit of tomatoes today including Roma tomatoes and cherry tomatoes.  I wasn’t sure if I was going to pick enough to make tomato sauce, but in the end I ended up picking plenty for this.  I also picked over 100 cherry tomatoes again and I am looking forward to eating them.

I also picked a few more cucumbers, beans, zucchini, and more peppers today.  I am hoping to soon pick my first honeydew melon sometime this month.

Let’s start out with my Roma tomatoes which I ended up picking quite a few.  These types are only good for sauce because they do not have seeds and are more meatier than others.  The seed factor is due to the fact that they are hybrids.  These super sauce tomatoes are much larger than normal Romas which makes them ideal for sauce.

Large Roma Tomato Harvest

I picked 23 of these large and meaty fruits which I will start tomorrow making sauce with them.  This is just the start of the Roma harvest and I still have plenty more of them in the garden.

My cherry tomato plants have been doing good this season and have been providing many harvests.  A couple days ago I picked a little bit over 100 cherry tomatoes, but today I picked 154 cherry tomatoes!

Peppers are also growing quite well and are still producing flowers along with vegetables.  I picked eight today that I thought were ripe enough and a couple were getting a little soft.  As long as I put them in the fridge they will be fine for the next week or two.

Eight Ripe Peppers

Some of the last cucumbers were picked this afternoon.  My plants are still producing flowers and vegetables, but I don’t think that they are going to be as big as they have been.  Basically the cucumber season is beginning to wind down.

One more zucchini can be added to my collection of these vegetables.  Using one of them a week for a meal can take awhile to use all of the ones that I have picked.  I still have about eight that I need to use before the one I picked today.  Nevertheless they will all be used before the end of the season.

Zucchini

I haven’t picked beans since the beginning of August and today there were some that were ready for harvesting.  I didn’t collect that much, but it is better than nothing.  My vines have plenty of flowers and I should see a large harvest in the next couple of weeks.

My onions have finally dried and it is time to bring them in from the weather.  Now that they are dry I can begin using them and start enjoying their sweet flavor.  I collected 97 onions this season.
