Picking a Bowl Full of Cherry Tomatoes and Garden Update

Last updated on

I thought since it has been a while since I wrote a post that I would give you an update on the garden.  Now that all my plants are starting to produce fruit – except for broccoli and cabbage which will come later- I thought today would be a perfect time to take some pictures of the plants progress.

I left off with my corn producing silks which will lead to ears of corn as long as they are pollinated.  With the rain that we received yesterday much of the pollen has gotten wet and there is nothing that I can do except wait for it to dry and try to place it on the silks of the corn.

I just hope that before it rained that all the silks that were growing were pollinated.  This is basically all I can hope for.  Normally it doesn’t rain this much in August, but it does happen and it is something that needs to be accounted for.  The good news is that my plants did need some rain and that included the corn stalks as well.  I like to look on the good side of things especially when it is out of my control.

This is how far my corn has grown at the moment and this is an ear from the first section of corn that was planted.  It is growing so that means it was pollinated and all that is left is just time for it to get as big as possible without getting too tough.

I wanted to mention my tomatoes today as well since after the rain there were many cherry tomatoes that had fallen to the grown.  This was mostly from the wind that came after the rain which is normal.

You can see that some of the cherry tomatoes were not ripe yet, but leaving them on the ground would be a waste.  I can just place these tomatoes on the windowsill and within a few days or so they will be good enough to eat.  Luckily they were almost ripe so it shouldn’t take that much time to turn red.

These are just tomatoes that were on the ground and I still have many more that need to be harvested.  I will have to go outside tomorrow and pick some more tomatoes such as Roma and cherry types.

I also have some Roma tomatoes that are ready as well.  These will be used to make some more tomato sauce so I am not worried about what they look like.  As long as they are ripe they will be used for delicious sauce.

You can see from the rain much of the sandy soil is all over the Roma tomatoes.  That will come off very easily once I give it a good rinse in the sink.  They are still good for making sauce.

Tomorrow I will also have to pick some more beans which I would have done yesterday, but it happened to rain and I happened to be very busy today and didn’t have time to pick them.

At the moment my peppers and cucumbers are still growing and producing flowers.  I wasn’t sure about the pepper plants this season and didn’t know if they were going to be productive.

I also am seeing the first eggplants of the season starting to grow.  I noticed them last week, but wasn’t certain if they were pollinated or not.  I just checked them today and saw that there were a few that are beginning to grow.

I also wanted to mention that I now have eight cantaloupes growing and some of them are close to ready for picking.  The first one that started growing is probably going to be the first to be harvested.  That could change depending on different factors.

Pumpkins are pretty much all set and zucchini plants are still growing and producing new leaves with new fruit.

Last but not least I figured that I should show you the progress of my fall crop that includes broccoli and cabbage.

After the rain they perked up pretty fast and very shortly I should be placing them in the ground.  I would say a week or so they will finally be placed in the ground and will grow until it gets too cold for the plants.  They should have plenty of time to grow their fruits and mature.
