This is just a short post I wanted to write about the two harvests that I had performed today. It has been a while since I had picked my first steakhouse tomato and my first ear of corn. Now that my corn and tomatoes are starting to ripen I thought it best to start picking them right away.
If I happen to leave corn outside for too long they can get real tough and it would have been a waste of time to grow all this corn in the garden. (more…)
I thought since it has been a while since I wrote a post that I would give you an update on the garden. Now that all my plants are starting to produce fruit – except for broccoli and cabbage which will come later- I thought today would be a perfect time to take some pictures of the plants progress.
I left off with my corn producing silks which will lead to ears of corn as long as they are pollinated. With the rain that we received yesterday much of the pollen has gotten wet and there is nothing that I can do except wait for it to dry and try to place it on the silks of the corn. (more…)
This week was full of a couple of harvests that included my Roma tomatoes, pole beans, and even a couple of ears of corn. I ended up picking some of my Roma tomatoes that were not quite ready yet, but I have placed them on the windowsill which will make them turn red in the end. I will be using these for sauce instead of anything else. That is exactly what these specialty fruits were made for.
The one thing that I will discuss in this post is the amount of pole beans that I picked yesterday and going to pick today. I was only able to just do one row that took at least a few hours of time to get as many as possible. This has been the best harvest of 2014 and it doesn’t seem like any other fruit or vegetable will come close to as good of a harvest. (more…)
It was only a couple of days ago that the tassels began to grow from my corn and it looked like that I was going to get some corn in the near future. I went outside today and discovered that there were some silks appearing from one of the corn stalks. This was the first sign that I could be getting corn in a week or so.
Granted this was only one corn stalk, but it signaled that my corn was growing correctly and I have been doing something right. I would be very surprised if this was the only stalk that began growing ears of corn. (more…)
