Fall Plants and a Few Eggplants are all That is Left to Harvest

This past week it has been getting cooler and some cold fall temperatures should be arriving before the week is over. Fall temps are now here and it is time to slowly close down the garden. I still have fall plants such as broccoli, kale, celery, and brussel sprouts that I will continue to care for and harvest. I even have a few eggplants that will be picked very shortly. For the most part the gardening season is coming to an end for this year. (more…)

Spinach, Pea, Radish, and Celery Seeds Into the Ground

This week is supposed to be cool, but with high enough temperatures that I can start planting most of my cool weather seeds.  I still have to plant the last of my seed potatoes and transplant my lettuce into the garden, but getting these four seeds into the garden is a big chunk of the cool weather season. Ordering Some New Seeds for 2016

Now that it is 2016 and the garden season will soon start in another month or so I thought it would be good to buy the seeds I needed for this new year.  I have a few new things that I plan on growing this season, but nothing that I can’t handle.

I will be saving some money this year from seeds that I have saved from the previous season.  I actually saved some amaranthus seeds that came from both the green and red varieties.  As always I saved at least one ear of corn that I left on the stalk to dry and then brought it inside once it was ready. End of Season With Celery and Carrots Harvested

One of the last things that I needed to do was wait for the day before Thanksgiving to dig up all the carrots that had grown this season.  I usually pick them the day before so that we can have fresh carrots for dinner.  Unfortunately it had rained the day before so I wasn’t able to pick them from the soil.  I had to wait until the day of in order to dig them up.  The good news is that I was able to have them for dinner that day once they were washed and then cooked. Three More Eggplants Harvested

Another slow week for gardening and with the weather getting cooler plants are starting to whither and die.  Yesterday we had plenty of rain that helped in the growth of my cabbage, celery, and pole beans that are continuing to produce flowers.

I didn’t think pole beans would last this long, but I am not complaining because I love beans.  Today I picked up three more eggplants that had showed signs of ripeness when I took a look at them.  Now that I have picked three today I only have one left that is still in the garden.  That one will be harvested soon with some more good weather. Garden Harvest Winding Down

It is now September and with the fall season just around the corner my garden harvest is coming to a close for this year.  Cooler weather is in the near future and most of my plants have reached their peak or are calling it quits for the year.

Five out of six of the pumpkins I am growing have ripened to the point that I could pick them very soon.  I like to pick them later usually closer to the month of October rather than now.  Tomatoes are done for the most part with only a couple of plants that have a few tomatoes left to pick. Second Day of Planting Seeds Outside

Now that I have started part of my heirloom corn and a few bush beans it is now time to start growing other seeds.  This year I was going to start with celery as a new plant to see how it does.

I also planted carrots as well since they are one of the more traditional plants that I must have every year.  I use the carrots from the garden every thanksgiving and it would be disappointing if I didn’t grow them.

Next to the corn and on the same row as the bush beans I have planted my pole beans.  After setting up my posts I like to plant them right away.  It is much easier to set everything up first and then planting the beans.  This way I won’t worry about walking over where I have planted. (more…)

Some Updates on Plants I have Added to My Indoor Collection

I just wanted to update you on what has been going on indoors.  First of all I have started to plant celery for the first time.  I place them in 3 inch peat pots which I think is a great way to start off with something that I have never grown before.

I also planted some basil which is a delicious herb to have around during the summertime.  It is very delicious and is easy to store if you know exactly what you are doing.  This is all that I wanted to let you know about.  Both of these were placed under the fluorescent lights which will hopefully give them a kick start to sprouting very quickly.
