Harvested All Three Types of Tomatoes This Week

This week has been good for tomato harvesting because they are now ripening to their red delicious color.  I have planted cherry, Roma, and steakhouse varieties this summer and they have began to start their ripening phase.  I only picked one Roma as compared to the others that I collected many of them.

I knew that at one time all my tomatoes will probably start turning red at once instead of periodically.  This is good because I love tomatoes and I can never get enough of them during the Winter time.  This is when I enjoy them the most because they are organic and come from my own backyard. Complete Onion Harvest and More Tomatoes

Yesterday I was able to get the entire onion harvest completed.  It doesn’t take long to take out onions once you get started it goes very quickly.  All I do is pull them out and brush off all the loose dirt and place them in a large container.  Since I have five totes full of onions a small bucket will fill up very fast.

In total I was able to get over 30 pounds of onions and a count of 95.  It seems like placing twenty bulbs in the beginning is the right amount you can place in these size totes. (more…)

Cantaloupe, Eggplant, and Corn on The Way

This past weekend we received some well needed rain.  This meant that Saturday and Sunday were very slow gardening days.  The only thing I did was pick some blueberries during a short period of no rain.  I collected as many berries as I could before it started to pour.  I was able to grab about two and a half pounds.  This has been the average for this season.

Today was the first time that I went outside to check my garden before the storms hit this weekend.  My pole beans are growing great and I should be getting a harvest from them any time now.  I picked some more bush beans which are probably going to be the last that I receive from them.  Now it is up to the pole ones to pick up the slack. Tomatoes Beginning to Ripen

I knew that cherry tomatoes were starting to turn red a week or two ago, but I thought the others would take much more time.  I went outside to pick some cherry tomatoes that were ready and I noticed that many others including Roma and steakhouse were no longer green.

Not all of them are starting to turn but the older ones that have been around for about a month or so are now beginning to ripen.  I would estimate that they are going to be ready before the end of the month.  It doesn’t take long for them to turn once they start heading in that direction. (more…)

Cherry Tomatoes and Cucumbers

The latest fruits and vegetables that I harvested this week would include cucumbers and cherry tomatoes.  It took quite a while before starting to see tomatoes turn red this year.  I have many other tomatoes that have not began to turn, but will soon do so over the next couple of weeks.  They will probably all start ripening at the same time.

Cucumbers were also picked this week, but only one of them was ready enough to be harvested.  The others will come in time now that I am starting to see more and more of these vegetables on the vine.  I would say about mid August will be the peak of the season for cucumbers and probably everything else as well. The Beginning of Pumpkins and Cucumbers

A busy weekend has gone by and I have some great news about some of my vegetables.  Pumpkins have began to come through and are getting bigger every day.  They have reached the size of a softball right now, but they will get bigger before they start to turn orange.

Cucumbers are also starting to grow and many of the plants are producing many flowers which will eventually lead to a large harvest.  Having them in June is the best time to have them.  Although they came a little bit later than last year I still think that I will get a good amount to enjoy for the rest of the season. Staking Tomatoes Using Stretch Ties

Normally I would stake my tomatoes much earlier in the year about the same time that I planted them in the ground or just shortly before or after.  This year I happened to do this a little later, but nevertheless my tomatoes are still growing very well and with extra support they will ripen much quicker.

I used to use old jeans and rip strips and use that for supporting my tomato plants.  This year I decided to try something a little different and see if this makes a difference in the quality and lifespan of my tomatoes plants and the fruit it produces. (more…)

Progress of Zucchini and Tomatoes

I wanted to keep you informed on the status of everything that I am growing in the garden which includes all vegetables, fruits, and flowers that I have added into the ground.  So far the only two plants that are producing include the zucchini and tomatoes.  They just happen to be the first of the season and soon I will have beans, cucumbers, cantaloupes, and many more with flowers.

The blueberries are on their way to harvest time with just some more sun they will soon be ready to be picked.  It doesn’t look like I have as much as I did last year, but I still think I will have a descent harvest for 2014.  While the blueberries are getting started the strawberries are finally winding down for now.  With a little care they will come back during the summer and at the end of the season harvest. Zucchini and Some Tomato Flowers Pollinated

This morning there was a quick rain storm that came through and gave my plants just a good soaking that they definitely needed.  If there was no rain I would have watered them myself regardless.  I happened to check up on the zucchini that I thought might have been pollinated and wanted to see its progress.

Good news!  The zucchini is getting larger which means that it was pollinated when the flower first opened a couple of days ago.  Now I can look forward to watching this vegetable grow until it reaches the appropriate size that I want.  Feeding is what will keep these plants growing for as long as possible producing delicious food. Tomatoes, Pumpkins, Zucchini, and Sunflowers Transplanted Into Garden

This has been a very busy memorial weekend especially for garden work that had to be completed this past week.  First of all with good weather it was time to begin transplanted the bulk of my plants that were ready to get out of their restricted containers.

I only was able to plant about half of the tomatoes that I grew inside because some of the later seeds that were grown are not ready to be removed from their pots.  I like to wait until the roots of the plant actually reaches the bottom of the pot and they wrap around all the soil.  This makes it easier for the plant to be removed and it will come out in one piece as you can see below.
