April is one of the busiest of months during the springtime where I like to transplant my cold weather plants into the garden and into totes. I always place my onion bulbs in totes and that is what I have been doing for years. At the moment not all my totes have onions and I have only planted a few red onions into three totes so far. I will fill up the totes with enough onions by sometime this week at the latest.

I have finally placed all my plants into the ground with an exception of a couple which will be placed very soon before the end of June. The only successful harvest at the moment has been my strawberries. I have been picking some late broccoli as well, but these are just a few heads and florets. I have some good lettuce that I will start picking soon I just wanted to be sure that the leaves will not turn out bitter. I made certain to do a few consecutive watering with lime to sweeten the soil.
The first phase of transplanting spring crops into the garden started earlier in the week with spinach, some lettuce, and a few Brassica plants. I still have a whole tray full of various plants (mostly lettuce) that I plan to get into the soil before the week is over. Radish and pea seeds have sprouted and I will start thinning them out very soon and possibly weeding them.

Sorry for the long period for a blog post, but I have plenty of things to discuss. This month has brought many rain storms and really windy days and made it difficult to till some of the garden soil and get some spring seeds planted. I finally had a good day to get the soil mixed this week and decided to plant peas, radishes, and sunflowers today even though it was cloudy, rainy, and windy. I couldn’t wait any longer to get these seeds into the ground.
It is that time of the year when I begin transplanting everything that I have grown indoors into the garden. Weather has definitely warmed up and a short heat wave came through this week making it the perfect time for placing all my plants outside and soon into the garden. (more…)
This week is supposed to be cool, but with high enough temperatures that I can start planting most of my cool weather seeds. I still have to plant the last of my seed potatoes and transplant my lettuce into the garden, but getting these four seeds into the garden is a big chunk of the cool weather season. (more…)
It is now September and with the fall season just around the corner my garden harvest is coming to a close for this year. Cooler weather is in the near future and most of my plants have reached their peak or are calling it quits for the year.
Five out of six of the pumpkins I am growing have ripened to the point that I could pick them very soon. I like to pick them later usually closer to the month of October rather than now. Tomatoes are done for the most part with only a couple of plants that have a few tomatoes left to pick. (more…)
