Now that some of my lettuce sprouts have started to pop through the soil soon it will be time to remove some of them and leave only one plant per pot.
I like to wait as long as possible so that I can just do all of them at the same time. This year it looks like that will not happen and will have to do each pot periodically due to different sprouting rates. (more…)
I have been pretty much weeding the entire garden this week and I wanted to wait until I completed that before writing another post, but instead I will give you a quick update on the garden instead.
I started with picking some of my Ruby glow lettuce earlier in the week and that was very exciting since last year I didn’t get as much as I would have liked. The first harvest I had from them yielded me 65 leaves. This is just short from my iceberg lettuce harvest. (more…)
It’s been awhile since I wrote a post here, but it has been quite busy around here and I want to share with you what has been going on with my garden plants, plants outside, and indoor ones as well.
So far not all of my plants have been outside, but most of my flowers are enjoying the fresh cool air. Yes it is still a little bit cool which is great for my spinach and onions. (more…)
I haven’t written a post in a little while and I thought I would give you an update on the progress of most of my plants as of today. Some good news is that the weather is getting warmer and the sun is staying out later which is great for all my plants including the ones in the ground.
I have been placing my plants in containers outside to get them accustomed to the temperature differences. This is the hardening process that can take a good couple of weeks. From there I will be putting them in the ground. (more…)
Just wanted to write a short post on how my plants are doing and some of the many seeds, flowers, and plants beginning to sprout. I have been watching my spinach closely along with the weather, because it will soon be time to place them in the ground.
With some of the warm weather we have been getting this month I have been putting my spinach plants outdoors getting them ready to be planted into the ground. This week has been quite cloudy and they have not been able to take advantage of the sun or lack thereof. (more…)
Similar to last season I am going to plant two types which include black seeded Simpson and the Ruby glow hybrid. Both of these plants I had last season, but I was not too impressed on how these plants grew and I want grow them again.
I also had some problems with groundhogs which ended up eating most of the Ruby glow lettuce. This definitely decreased the yield that I could have received if I didn’t have to deal with these pests. That is why I am going to try it again this season. (more…)
Just wanted to update you on what has been going on with my garden over the past week. So far I have only been picking my black seeded Simpson lettuce at the moment which is a great iceberg type lettuce. It The lettuce has been growing quite well and the leaves have grown to large sizes.
I am very happy about this because last season I didn’t grow any and I definitely missed out on their great flavor. I still have not picked any of the ruby glow hybrid leaves yet, but they are not growing as fast as my iceberg lettuce. Granted these are romaine type leaves and I will have to pick them differently than my iceberg type leaves. (more…)
Today was perfect for picking lettuce leaves especially after the rain we got this past week. The cool weather also helped them and it showed when I started harvesting the plants and how big the leaves were. They were similar in size to my spinach leaves that were picked last month.
I probably could have picked some leaves in mid to late May if I wanted to, but I wanted to make sure that the leaves got as big as they possibly could. Most of the plants had large lettuce leaves which were the oldest and the first ones harvested. (more…)
I had ten more tomatoes that were still in pots and continuing to grow, but starting to look like they were becoming pot bound. This is something to avoid when growing indoors and since they had grown as far as they could in the containers I thought it would be best to place them in the garden right away.
I have over twenty tomato plants that are either steakhouse, Roma, or cherry tomatoes. I should have more of the super sauce Roma plants than any of the others because I planted all 25 seeds that came in the packet and only a few of steakhouse and cherry. This week has been quite interesting with all the sprouting of many of my seeds that were grown this past month. I am finally seeing spinach beginning to grow and it only took the entire month of March to do so. It would be better if they started sprouting a week or two ago, but it is better late than never.
Most of my flowers have began sprouting including sunflowers, calendula, Queen Anne’s lace, amaranthus, cosmos, dill, alyssum, and much more. Both lettuce types have began sprouting as well. (more…)
