Waiting the Right Amount of Time to Transplant Spinach and Kale

April is one of the busiest of months during the springtime where I like to transplant my cold weather plants into the garden and into totes. I always place my onion bulbs in totes and that is what I have been doing for years. At the moment not all my totes have onions and I have only planted a few red onions into three totes so far. I will fill up the totes with enough onions by sometime this week at the latest.

Spinach, Lettuce, and Kale Getting Ahead for the Spring

It is now 2021 and it is that time of the season when I start planting seeds for the springtime temperatures that will arrive in a couple of months. In the meantime I can get them started in pots so once warmer temperatures are here they will be ready to be transported into the garden. This year I decided to stick to a few seeds of spinach, lettuce, and kale.

Looking Towards a Fresh Spring Start

This year I hope to be an interesting one with a few new plants that I am going to try out for the first time. I plan on having a larger than normal spring crop with plenty of plants including spinach, eight different types of lettuce, potatoes, peas, radishes, and maybe even some broccoli and many more. I haven’t planned it all out yet, but I am hoping to get all of these plants into the garden as soon as spring comes around and temps begin to rise.

Transplanted Spinach into the Garden

Spring Transplants Have Been Seated into the Soil

The first phase of transplanting spring crops into the garden started earlier in the week with spinach, some lettuce, and a few Brassica plants. I still have a whole tray full of various plants (mostly lettuce) that I plan to get into the soil before the week is over. Radish and pea seeds have sprouted and I will start thinning them out very soon and possibly weeding them.

Spinach, Pea, Radish, and Celery Seeds Into the Ground

This week is supposed to be cool, but with high enough temperatures that I can start planting most of my cool weather seeds.  I still have to plant the last of my seed potatoes and transplant my lettuce into the garden, but getting these four seeds into the garden is a big chunk of the cool weather season. Getting Started for the New Garden Season

The Winter season went by quite fast and it is already time to begin planting indoors.  This year rather than planting spinach indoors I have decided on beginning with lettuce instead.

I still will be growing spinach, but instead of starting them indoors I will just plant them directly outside when it is time to do so.  I have also decided to plant all four types of lettuce. (more…)

Spinach Harvesting and Tilling Garden

It has been a little while since my last post, but I promise that I will not go that long without writing an update again.  This month is getting a little busy and being behind at least a couple weeks I will have to get my garden going as quickly as possible.

I first started with picking spinach leaves at the beginning of the week with most of my plants producing large leaves.  This season I wanted to grow them longer before I started cutting the leaves and it definitely was worth it. (more…)

Update on All Indoor and Outdoor Plants

It’s been awhile since I wrote a post here, but it has been quite busy around here and I want to share with you what has been going on with my garden plants, plants outside, and indoor ones as well.

So far not all of my plants have been outside, but most of my flowers are enjoying the fresh cool air.  Yes it is still a little bit cool which is great for my spinach and onions. (more…)

Update on Plant Progress So Far

I haven’t written a post in a little while and I thought I would give you an update on the progress of most of my plants as of today.  Some good news is that the weather is getting warmer and the sun is staying out later which is great for all my plants including the ones in the ground.

I have been placing my plants in containers outside to get them accustomed to the temperature differences.  This is the hardening process that can take a good couple of weeks.  From there I will be putting them in the ground. (more…)
