Getting Started for the New Garden Season

Last updated on

The Winter season went by quite fast and it is already time to begin planting indoors.  This year rather than planting spinach indoors I have decided on beginning with lettuce instead.

I still will be growing spinach, but instead of starting them indoors I will just plant them directly outside when it is time to do so.  I have also decided to plant all four types of lettuce.

I used Styrofoam cups rather than the usual plastic cups that are slightly bigger.  The roots of the lettuce plants do not need that much room to grow and that is why I decided on using these cups.

Since I decided on growing the four types of lettuce seeds this season I thought I would let you know exactly what types I chose for this season.  Igloo, Ruby glow hybrid, buttercrunch, and black seeded Simpson are my choices for 2017.

These plants should be ready by March-April which is about when I will begin planting them into the garden.  Since they can last much longer in cooler weather I am able to start them much sooner than I normally would.

At the same time I will try to plant spinach in the garden once I place all my lettuce into the garden first.  The next seeds I will plant would be my flowers that I use for attracting beneficial insects.

I got a new packet of seeds this season that might be able to attract butterflies and hummingbirds possibly.  I thought this would be something new that I could add to the garden.  This will be a new flower which hopefully will help in attracting good insects.

I also want to plant watermelons into pots soon to get an even bigger head start to the season.  I am debating whether or not to plant them in large pots indoors.
