Finally My Spinach Plants are in the Ground

The weather lately has been quite crazy with some warm days last week and then a cold blast the past couple of days.  We even had a snow storm this past week and that definitely interrupted the process of getting my spinach plants into the ground.

It actually got so cold that the ground refroze and I couldn’t do anything even though I had tilled part of the garden the week before.  I was hoping to get my spinach plants transplanted by this past weekend, but because of the cold and rain I was unable to do that. (more…)

First Partial Tilling of the Season

Like every season I always do a partial tilling for my cold weather plants like spinach and lettuce.  I will do a full tilling later on in the season around May or late April depending on the weather.

Today was windy but still warm enough to get some work done in the garden.  I am hoping to plant all or the majority of my spinach tomorrow if I have enough time.  I have about 22 plants and that should take only a couple of hours to complete. (more…)

Indoor Planting of Several Fruits and Vegetables

I have a few things to tell you about that has been happening today.  First off my spinach is staying outside longer and longer and by tomorrow they will be outside for the entire day and night.  This will be a relief because I can soon look forward to finally plant them in the ground.

On another note I have some more seeds starting to sprout and these were the last two that I thought would take a little bit longer to begin with.  Three of my watermelons are showing signs of life and the Queen Anne’s lace has several coming up from the soil. (more…)

Lettuce and Flowers Sprouting

Just wanted to write a short post on how my plants are doing and some of the many seeds, flowers, and plants beginning to sprout.  I have been watching my spinach closely along with the weather, because it will soon be time to place them in the ground.

With some of the warm weather we have been getting this month I have been putting my spinach plants outdoors getting them ready to be planted into the ground.  This week has been quite cloudy and they have not been able to take advantage of the sun or lack thereof. (more…)

Spinach Sprouting and Dill Planted in Large Containers

Not long after planting my alyssum this week I noticed that my spinach seeds were beginning to sprout.  I didn’t think they would sprout within a week of planting them, but I am not complaining.  This is much better than having them not sprout at all.

The earlier they begin to grow the faster that they can get to a good size before planting them outside.  Since they sprouted sooner this means that they will be planted in the ground much sooner or at least until I can work the soil. (more…)

Planting Seeds of Spinach Indoors Started Today

The season is finally here and it is time to plant as many seeds indoors as possible beginning with spinach.  Spinach is a cold plant and is perfect for starting indoors and bringing them outside on good days during the month of March.

I have been sifting my worm compost this past week because I use quite a bit of it when I start my seed planting indoors.  I also use it during the season as well which is great for any plant especially with tomatoes. (more…)

Planted Corn, Carrots, and Bean Seeds in Garden

Now temperatures are in the high 70’s and the month of May is coming to an end I thought now would be a great time to start planting bean, corn, and carrot seeds into the garden.  I could have planted them earlier in the month, but I wanted to get most of my transplants into the ground first before growing these seeds.

The good news is that these plants do not need that much time to mature except for maybe corn.  Carrots do not need that much time to complete their roots and pole beans once they start getting flowers they are pretty much all set for the season. (more…)

All Lettuce Has Been Transplanted

It is now the busiest time of the year in terms of gardening and it is time to start transplanting all the plants I have been growing during the Spring.  This also means start planting seeds that were not grown indoors as well.

For now I have started with my cooler plants in order to get them into the soil as quickly as possible since the weather is starting to heat up which is not good for lettuce.  My spinach plants are starting to bolt which means I will be running out of leaves to harvest. (more…)

A Good Weeding Around Spinach Plants

As any gardener will tell you weeding is one of the most important and time consuming tasks that a gardener has to take.  Once you get the hang of weeding properly it becomes so much easier and it will not take that much time.

Unfortunately this is something that has to be done from time to time even if you have placed a layer of thick mulch or black plastic to prevent weeds from growing.  Weeds will literally grow anywhere. (more…)

Finished Tilling the Garden and More Spinach Harvesting

It has been a little while since I last made a post, but it has been quite busy nevertheless.  First of all I finally completed tilling the garden this evening and it took quite a few days to do this.  It took much longer than usual and that was mostly because I was picking up many large rocks in the garden while I was tilling.  This took some time to do.

I was hoping to be completed by last week and start planting many of my plants into the ground.  That way this week all I would have to do is begin planting seeds that are sown into the ground directly.  This includes corn, beans, and carrots. (more…)
