Rather than collecting just one or two types of fruits or vegetables I decided on picking everything that looked ripe. This includes zucchini, beans, cucumbers, peppers, cantaloupe, and even cherry tomatoes.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to pick some more corn yesterday, but I decided to wait until this afternoon to pick some more ears. Most of them should be ready by now or at least ripe enough to be considered for consumption. (more…)
It has been very busy this week especially with all new harvests of corn and cantaloupes. The cantaloupe was nearly by accident because I wanted to check out the connection between the melon and the vine and when I turned it over it just came right off. Good thing the melon was pretty much ready anyways.
The other cantaloupe that I picked was coming off from the vine so I just decided on removing it since it was going to come done at any moment. No reason to leave it on the vine like that. (more…)
I thought since it has been a while since I wrote a post that I would give you an update on the garden. Now that all my plants are starting to produce fruit – except for broccoli and cabbage which will come later- I thought today would be a perfect time to take some pictures of the plants progress.
I left off with my corn producing silks which will lead to ears of corn as long as they are pollinated. With the rain that we received yesterday much of the pollen has gotten wet and there is nothing that I can do except wait for it to dry and try to place it on the silks of the corn. (more…)
I have been working in the garden for the past week including this past weekend. The weather has been hot which is great for many of my plants including tomatoes, melons, and cucumbers. I have not picked any tomatoes as they have not started to turn red. They should begin ripening at any time and can’t wait to harvest them.
Cucumbers on the other hand have been growing quite well along with zucchini and pumpkins that are coming along. All my cucumber plants are now producing flowers and it is only a matter of time before I start picking many of them. Today I happened to pick the first of many cucumbers. (more…)
This past week has been crazy because I have been weeding my garden every single day trying to stay ahead of the growth of the plants in the garden. Getting behind can be a pain because weeds will be growing faster than I can remove them.
By staying ahead I can work on other things in the garden such as laying down layers of mulch to block weeds, placing ropes on my bean trellis for my pole beans to climb, fertilizing many plants, and so much more. (more…)
Today is just more of an update on the garden since it has been at least a week since my last post. This week has been crazily busy especially with all the rain and the weeds growing in the garden. I have had to work in the garden most of the week trying to remove all the weeds that I could.
All I have left to weed would be the tomatoes and some other small areas. I will begin mulching some plants which might include corn and maybe beans. It all depends how much mulch I am able to collect this week. (more…)
Just wanted to update you on what has been going on with my garden over the past week. So far I have only been picking my black seeded Simpson lettuce at the moment which is a great iceberg type lettuce. It The lettuce has been growing quite well and the leaves have grown to large sizes.
I am very happy about this because last season I didn’t grow any and I definitely missed out on their great flavor. I still have not picked any of the ruby glow hybrid leaves yet, but they are not growing as fast as my iceberg lettuce. Granted these are romaine type leaves and I will have to pick them differently than my iceberg type leaves. (more…)
I have been real busy this week trying to get as many plants into the ground as possible before the weekend. I wanted to get my melons and cucumbers in the ground as soon as possible in order to get them growing faster right away. They need some time to produce fruit and the quicker they are placed in the ground the sooner the harvest.
We also got some rain this week as well and that was definitely a good help for all my plants that were outside and in the ground especially my onions, lettuce, and spinach. (more…)
This past week was a little exciting especially when it came to finally harvesting all my pumpkins. I ended up picking them from the garden the day before Halloween so that they would be as fresh as possible. This doesn’t really matter because I don’t eat pumpkin as soon as I pick them. Most of the stuffing inside stays fresh for quite a while.
I also picked some more pole beans which I thought were done when I wrote this post earlier in the week. Come to find out that they kept growing right to the very end. Now that below freezing weather has came they are no longer producing any beans and I will be taking them down sometime this week. (more…)
Right now temperatures are too low for plants to produce any more flowers or fruit. The last productive plants that are left and was able to get a late crop from would be the pole beans that are barely hanging on. They will be removed from the garden very soon once I get all the corn stalks cut and ready for burning.
This week I went outside and saw that there were still plenty of pole beans left to pick and decided to get another harvest. I was surprised at the amount that wast left and filled up about four containers worth of these beans. It was enough to make another batch of canning. (more…)
