Lettuce and Watermelon Planted Early
Last updated onI actually decided on planting my watermelon seeds earlier than I usually do in order to get the best head start possible. I will probably stick with three plants as long as three out of the six seeds I planted today sprout.
Carolina cross are some of the largest watermelons that you can grow and starting them inside is the only way that you can get a really good size watermelon. I am also planting them in large green pots instead of using peat pots this year. Something I am trying and I will see if it was worth the effort.
Not only did I plant watermelons I also decided to get my lettuce harvest ready. They are not as cold loving plants like spinach, but they do like the cool spring air that should be coming in another month or so.
Last year I did not have a lettuce harvest and that was something that I missed. That is why this year I am going to make it up by planting two varieties of lettuce. This includes the heirloom black seeded Simpson and the Ruby glow hybrid.
I even had some more time that I decided to get some flowers going as well. This included Queen Anne’s lace, calendula, amaranthus green and red flowers, and statice. I will be growing sunflowers quite soon along with many more flowers such as cosmos.
I also wanted to mention that the first sign of alyssum is starting to poke through the soil. It only took them three days to finally sprout.
