Broccoli and Kale Starting to Come Through

Last updated on

It looks like my fall crops are doing quite well now that I have picked several kale leaves and heads of broccoli.  I only started harvesting broccoli heads a few days ago, but I have been picking kale leaves for a couple of weeks.  Today will be the third harvest of kale for the season.

So far I have picked about 70 leaves of kale which I have been freezing and hopefully will be using them during the Winter to make some delicious kale soup.  That is the main reason I grow these leaves in the Fall.  Today I picked only 12 leaves, but they are very large leaves which is better than having many small leaves.

I have also been harvesting broccoli heads and only a few side shoots at the moment.  The side shoots are where the most of the broccoli comes from and the head is the first to grow and be picked.  I have picked three heads and four side shoots at the moment.

These are only the broccoli heads that I have harvested.  Below are some of the side shoots that I have picked from a couple of these plants.

Granted only four have been picked, but I should be getting many more of them once I have picked all the heads from my broccoli plants.  This is when they start producing many more side shoots and many more harvests
