Thanksgiving is Not The Same Without Home Grown Carrots

Last updated on

The very last summer plants that I harvest last are carrots.  They have been in the ground the entire summer and most of the Fall.  I like to leave them in the ground because the ground makes for a good storage area.

I have been picking some cabbage lately and a few more pieces of broccoli.  All I have left are a couple of cabbage plants and whatever broccoli I get from now until the ground freezes.

This year was a good year for carrots and I think I made up from last season with very few carrots.  I am glad that this season I planted two full rows of seeds.  Since most of them sprouted this year it made it a good sign that I would have plenty of carrots.

I was able to collect three full buckets of carrots this year while last season I don’t think I filled one.  They are a good size this year and it will take a while to eat them all.  Luckily I will can them and save most of them for the Winter.

I would say that this year was a good year for carrots.  Next year I might grow a different variety of carrots, but I won’t know until the month of January.

On a side note I have been picking some more cabbage that was ready for harvesting.  I actually picked one of the best ones in the garden last week.  It actually hadn’t been severely damaged by imported cabbage worms.

At the moment I am just continuing to pick whatever happens to need harvesting.  This would include the last couple of cabbage heads as well as broccoli and possibly kale leaves.

Happy Thanksgiving to All!
