The beginning of harvesting corn for 2022

Corn is The Latest Vegetable to be Harvested in the Month of August

A little bit less than half of the corn this week has been harvested with many more ears of corn not quite ready yet. The ones that I have harvested this year look to be quite good in size and hopefully in taste once I bite into a couple of them. Today was the first harvest of corn and was able to pick 15 ears of corn that weighed 7 1/2 lbs after the husks were removed from them. I think there are at least double that still growing on the stalks.

Spring Crops That Survived Through the Summer and Into Fall

Right now I still have broccoli and kale which were both planted in the spring still producing leaves and broccoli florets. These are normally planted in the fall, but this is one of those years that I decided to plant them early in the spring to see if they would produce more. Broccoli on the hand was planted to last through the hot summer months while kale just happened to survive this long with some proper care. I did plant some pea seeds a couple of weeks ago and I hope that they will sprout soon. This is the only fall crop I have planted for this year.

Following Onions Comes Eggplant and Broccoli Harvesting

It is now prime harvesting time with onions picked out of the totes and now broccoli, eggplants, more tomatoes, and beans are ready. At this moment I probably have picked every vegetable from the garden except for pumpkins which I picked much later and melons that will also come later in the season. I also started picking the second row of corn which is a all white type of corn. They looked very weird, but were actually quite delicious and didn’t taste that much different from any other corn I have grown.

Many Vegetable Harvest are on The Way This Year

Right now there are many harvests that are going to be coming very soon now that most of my plants are producing flowers and fruit. I have so far been picking mostly my strawberries and kale. My strawberries are all done for the season and my kale continues to grow and as long as it produces more leaves I will harvest them. Some of the plants started to go to seed, but I was able to catch it time and cut off the bolting part of the plant. Let’s get into what I will be picking in the near future from my garden.

Strawberry Harvest

Three Strawberry Harvests Completed This Year

I have finally placed all my plants into the ground with an exception of a couple which will be placed very soon before the end of June. The only successful harvest at the moment has been my strawberries. I have been picking some late broccoli as well, but these are just a few heads and florets. I have some good lettuce that I will start picking soon I just wanted to be sure that the leaves will not turn out bitter. I made certain to do a few consecutive watering with lime to sweeten the soil.

Beans are Mature Enough for Harvesting Along With Eggplants

This will be quite a long post since I haven’t written one in awhile. Many harvests have been happening over the past several weeks. Some of these harvests include many fruits and vegetables. Many of them are the first for the season such as beans, cantaloupes, and even eggplants. I also have my fall crop in the ground which includes both broccoli and kale. These I will be harvesting far into the fall season and possibly longer depending on the weather.

June Bearing Strawberries Ready for Picking

The gardening season is upon us and with June having just arrived this also means June bearing strawberries are beginning to ripen. Now that these strawberries have turned color it is time to start picking them and enjoy their sweet flavor. This marks the very first harvest for the year. I have many other plants that will need to be harvested and I will discuss that in this article.

Melons and Pumpkins Ready for Harvesting

With lower temperatures arriving and less sunlight in the daytime plants are beginning to finish off the season with the last production of fruit. Broccoli, brussel sprouts, and kale will continue through the fall and the rest will be done by the first frost of the season sometime in the near future. Right now I can still harvest some fruits and vegetables such as beans, pumpkins, and some melons that are done growing. (more…)

A Couple Eggplants and Several Large Steakhouse Tomatoes

This past week has been more about tomatoes than anything else in the garden. I have been picking tons of cherry tomatoes, some Roma tomatoes that were made into sauce, and several steakhouse tomatoes that weigh about one pound or more each. I also picked the first two eggplants of the season along with some beans and a couple of cucumbers. Let’s take a look at all my garden produce harvested this week. (more…)

Those Ears of Corn are Now Ripe Enough for Harvesting

That is correct most of my corn is now ready to be picked while others still need just a little bit more time. Today was actually the start of harvests from corn, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Now that most of my blueberries have been picked it is now time to focus on other fruits and vegetables that may be ready for harvesting. (more…)
