Sunflower Heads Harvested

Now that the garden is coming to a close I will be writing less about my latest harvests.  This week I saw that many of the sunflower seeds were being eaten which means that the seeds are ready to be harvested.  Rather than removing each seed individually it is better to just cut off the head and bring it inside to dry.  This way birds, squirrels, or other pests will not be able to steal them.

Once they dry you can then use the seeds for anything you want such as frying them, eating them as is, or just grinding them up for a sunflower seed meal.  You can just feed them to birds if you like or put them in a bird feeder.  The choice is up to you. (more…)

Transplanted Flowers, Herbs, and Some More Tomatoes

Setting flowers into the garden is best done at the same time that you are planting everything else.  Usually I tend to plant them once I get all the other vegetables and fruits set into the ground.  They will take some time to produce the blooms that you need to attract bees and insects.  The summer is where you should see them flowering and continuous blooms will come.

As previously stated I had some tomatoes grown inside after the first batch had begun sprouting or didn’t sprout.  I have added them into the garden and now I only have just a couple of more left that will soon go out probably by next week at the latest.  I also have a few more flowers that will go into the garden as well. Tomatoes, Pumpkins, Zucchini, and Sunflowers Transplanted Into Garden

This has been a very busy memorial weekend especially for garden work that had to be completed this past week.  First of all with good weather it was time to begin transplanted the bulk of my plants that were ready to get out of their restricted containers.

I only was able to plant about half of the tomatoes that I grew inside because some of the later seeds that were grown are not ready to be removed from their pots.  I like to wait until the roots of the plant actually reaches the bottom of the pot and they wrap around all the soil.  This makes it easier for the plant to be removed and it will come out in one piece as you can see below.

Onions Began Sprouting and More Seeds Planted

Today is a quick update on what has been happening in the garden and new seeds that have been planted inside.  As you know onions were planted about a couple of weeks ago during some of the warmer days that we had.  Onions love cooler temperatures and a moist soil.  Luckily the past week has provided them with the desired environment for them to grow rather quickly.

I also have some updates regarding the last of the beneficial flowers that I have planted indoors.  I always find it important to grow as much as you can in the beginning, but these plants are very quick to generate flowers and they can be used as an herb as well.

Some flowers that I planted earlier in the season have began sprouting and are starting to show signs of small blossoms.  If they start blooming inside that is fine because these types of flowers will bloom all year round.  This will produce enough food for the beneficial insects and bees that you are trying to attract and bring to your garden. Plant Progress and Some More Alyssum Added

I want to share with you some of the progress that I have been having with my plants and some that I have added in order to maximize my time.

So far my plants are doing really good and it will soon be time to leave them out overnight and then into the garden soil they will go soon after.  Right now during warm days I have been placing them outside on a table that can hold much of my early plantings.

I also added some more flowers to addition to the ones that I started growing a month ago.  Alyssum is one of those flowers that I love to grow as much as possible because of the numerous beneficial insects it attracts.  Bees love them lady beetles, flower flies, hover flies, and so much more. Second Phase of Vegetable Planting Indoors

Today I started another phase of vegetable planting that was needed due to some seeds not sprouting at all.  One thing that I would like to point out when growing plants inside is that you need to have patience.  This is something that I lack when it comes to growing any type of plant and it is one element that can help you in your own gardening.

Everything that I place under the lights usually takes about half the time that it would usually take if I had placed them in a windowsill.  Some plants I start with the lights some I don’t.  For instance the flowers I planted earlier in the season were started right in the windowsill.  Along with them were the sunflowers, watermelon, and tomatoes.  Everything else used the fluorescent lights which are a great help. Purchased Some More Vegetable and Flower Seeds

Spring is officially here and it’s time to start gearing up for the warmer weather that is about to come in another month or so.  It is also time to start preparing the soil for your cold weather plants such as spinach, onions, rhubarb, garlic, etc.

Just wanted to give an update on what I have done the past week and what you should expect in the future.  Yesterday I decided to purchase some more seeds including many flower seeds and a couple of vegetables that I will need for the season.

You can never have too many flowers and that is exactly what I did on this last purchase.  Burpee was having a free shipping sale and I happened to have a gift card that I wanted to use so I decided on taking advantage of this great offer. (more…)

More Flowers and Vegetables to Start Growing Indoors

It’s time to start growing more flowers that you need during the garden season including more vegetables as well.  I unfortunately ran out of room on the windowsill and I had to utilize a simple fluorescent light – which you can purchase at any hardware store – to get these plants up and flourishing.

The good news is that many of your plants will be ready when spring time comes around and all you will have to do is transplant them into the garden.  There are some plants which you cannot transplant including carrots, corn, beans, etc.  You should grow as many plants as you can before hand to have a better harvest.

Today I decided to grow some flowers and vegetables.  There were some flowers that I was not able to get to previously, but they can always be planted directly outdoors if I had ran out of room inside. (more…)
