Thanksgiving is Not The Same Without Home Grown Carrots

The very last summer plants that I harvest last are carrots.  They have been in the ground the entire summer and most of the Fall.  I like to leave them in the ground because the ground makes for a good storage area.

I have been picking some cabbage lately and a few more pieces of broccoli.  All I have left are a couple of cabbage plants and whatever broccoli I get from now until the ground freezes. (more…)

Frost Officially Ended Summer Season

Just recently we received a small to light frost that ended the season for most of my summer plants.  I did have only a few harvests of the last peppers and one eggplant.  Now that we have had many consecutive days of cold weather the plants are now gone except for cabbage, broccoli, and kale. (more…)

Broccoli and Kale Starting to Come Through

It looks like my fall crops are doing quite well now that I have picked several kale leaves and heads of broccoli.  I only started harvesting broccoli heads a few days ago, but I have been picking kale leaves for a couple of weeks.  Today will be the third harvest of kale for the season. (more…)

Biggest Watermelon Picked Along with Kale, Peppers, and More

Getting the most out of the garden is the most important part of gardening.  This season I think I did just that with all the fruits and vegetables that I have picked and still harvesting.  With the largest watermelon that I have ever grown I think I have definitely accomplished my objective.

I don’t have much vegetables left except for mainly my fall crops.  I have been picking my kale lately and they are growing very large leaves which will make for some great kale soup this winter.  I have been making sure to store them in order to use them later. (more…)

Picking the First of My Fall Kale Crop

Now that it is October and fall is officially here it is time to start focusing on my cooler weather plants.  Today was a great day for picking kale and most of the plants had very large leaves that needed to be harvested right away.

I am pretty much done with my summer plants and again the last thing that is out there is the last watermelon that I need to pick.  I will be picking it before the weekend so make sure to check back and find out when I finally harvest this last melon. (more…)

Its Time to Start Planting Fall Seeds for an October Harvest

Now that it is the end of July and the month of August is upon us it is time to start planting seeds for a good October harvest.  That is what I have done today with the planting of kale, cabbage, and broccoli.

I decided to plant an equal amount of seeds using small black containers.  I should have eight plants of each if all the seeds sprout in the next couple of weeks.  This is all I need for a good harvest. (more…)

Ordering Some New Seeds for 2016

Now that it is 2016 and the garden season will soon start in another month or so I thought it would be good to buy the seeds I needed for this new year.  I have a few new things that I plan on growing this season, but nothing that I can’t handle.

I will be saving some money this year from seeds that I have saved from the previous season.  I actually saved some amaranthus seeds that came from both the green and red varieties.  As always I saved at least one ear of corn that I left on the stalk to dry and then brought it inside once it was ready. (more…)

Digging Up Carrots For Thanksgiving

It has been a while since I wrote my last post, but it has been pretty uneventful in regards to the garden.  I have been picking broccoli on a consistent basis usually two to three times per week.  At the moment I have been collecting and it seems that the cold weather is starting to get to them because they have stopped producing.

I picked some large heads this season which I am very happy about and also some small ones too.  They didn’t taste bitter which I was a little worried about in the beginning, but in the end they had the exact taste I was looking for. (more…)
