Pole Beans: The Next Vegetable to be Harvested

I went through the entire garden today and wanted to see if there were any other fruits or vegetables that might be ready for a small harvest.  I have been noticing that some of my tomatoes were beginning to ripen and they might soon be harvested in a week or less.

I also have onions that will probably be dug out of the ground and totes real soon.  Right now I am reaching the climax or busiest part of the garden season where many harvests will be coming at the same time. (more…)

Tomatoes Turning Red and Melons Getting Bigger

A couple of things have been happening in the garden and I wanted to take a look at some of the fruits that are beginning to grow and get much bigger.  This includes both cantaloupes and the one watermelon that is thriving quite well.

Some of the vines on my cantaloupe plants actually have two melons growing and they were covered by the leaves and I happen to miss them when I was working with my plants.  Hopefully they will not take too much nutrients from each other making them smaller than they should. (more…)

Melons, Peppers, and Beans Coming Through

Wanted to give a quick update on the garden so far and how many plants are finally starting to produce.  Some of the ones I want to discuss include peppers, cucumbers, melons, and beans.  I have not mentioned much about my peppers, but now they are beginning to flower and grow peppers.

I also went through all my melons to see if I could find some that have been pollinated and are ready to get much bigger.  They tend to grow every single day and you could even keep tract of how much they grow each day.  This is something that I don’t do, but I do take pictures of them each day to see the difference. Transplanted Last of Tomatoes, Two Eggplants, and Five Pepper Plants

I had ten more tomatoes that were still in pots and continuing to grow, but starting to look like they were becoming pot bound.  This is something to avoid when growing indoors and since they had grown as far as they could in the containers I thought it would be best to place them in the garden right away.

I have over twenty tomato plants that are either steakhouse, Roma, or cherry tomatoes.  I should have more of the super sauce Roma plants than any of the others because I planted all 25 seeds that came in the packet and only a few of steakhouse and cherry.  Hopefully more sauce to be made this season. Last of the Spinach Transplanted to Garden

I recently had planted nine of the strongest spinach plants into the garden last week and I had 11 that I wanted to place by the end of this week at the latest.  Yesterday I completed putting the rest into the garden and only took about a couple of hours.

I probably could have waited a little bit longer for the plants to grow more roots in order to make it easier to take them out of the containers.  Most of them seemed to come out pretty easily. (more…)

Onions Planted on April 2 This Season

The first of April is usually when I begin planning on putting onions into the garden.  In fact I love placing them in totes which is how I grow onions from year to year with good success.

With cooler but warm enough weather for onions to survive right now was a perfect time to get them into totes.  I even planted some in the ground as well since I had plenty of onion bulbs left.

Tomatoes, Peppers, and Eggplant Placed in Small Pots

Just wanted to let you know that I decided on planting tomatoes a little bit earlier than last season.  This year I want to make sure that I get plenty of Roma tomatoes that I can then use to make sauces that I can then store for the Winter.

I thought last years tomatoes were real good and instead of getting all new tomatoes I just purchased the same hybrid seeds I got last season.  This includes the Roma super sauce and Steakhouse varieties.  If it isn’t broken then don’t fix it is what I say. (more…)

Pole Beans and Another Eggplant Harvested

Today was a sunny day and a good one after having about a week of cloudy skies and rain which was definitely needed.  I went out to the garden and find out how my fruits and vegetables were doing.  I saw that there were more pole beans to pick even though they are starting to slow down.  They keep producing flowers and as long as they do I will have to go outside and harvest more of them.

The eggplants are still growing well and I took a look at some of them and saw that one was ready to pick.  I now have two harvested eggplants that need to be cooked and eaten and four left to be harvest which may come very soon. (more…)

Last Cucumber and Cherry Tomatoes Harvested

Today I picked the last cucumber of the season making this one of the shorter years for this vegetable.  I was able to harvest quite a few which added up to a large amount compared to other years where I didn’t get as many.  They also didn’t all come at once which is great because I don’t have to eat them as fast as possible and can take my time with them.

I also saw some pole beans and cherry tomatoes that were ready as well and decided to pick them before they turned yellow or soft.  I am still getting pole bean flowers and that means more beans are on the way until the first frost of the season.  Cherry tomatoes are done for the most part and I am pretty certain all the other tomatoes are coming to an end. Eggplant, Cantaloupe, and Other Harvested Fruits and Vegetables

It has been busy week after all the harvests that I completed over the past few days.  This includes picking pole beans and canning all of them for Winter season storage.  Picking as many Roma tomatoes as possible and getting them to ripen in the windowsill.  When they ripe it is then time to make tomato sauce with them which takes pretty much all day to accomplish.

Now I have two new harvests to deal with including cantaloupe and eggplants.  Cantaloupe I picked a few days ago as well as the eggplant.  I had left the eggplant on the bush for as long as possible so that it would ripen correctly and once it reached its peak it was time to remove it. (more…)
