Pole Beans: The Next Vegetable to be Harvested

Last updated on

I went through the entire garden today and wanted to see if there were any other fruits or vegetables that might be ready for a small harvest.  I have been noticing that some of my tomatoes were beginning to ripen and they might soon be harvested in a week or less.

I also have onions that will probably be dug out of the ground and totes real soon.  Right now I am reaching the climax or busiest part of the garden season where many harvests will be coming at the same time.

I actually am thinking about picking pole beans real soon because they have reached the perfect size for harvesting.  Larger beans are better and I always wait until they get as big as possible before they turn yellow and dry out.  Just before this happens is the perfect time for harvesting.

Pole Beans Ready for Harvesting

This is about the average size of pole beans that I usually end up picking each year.  The vines have been growing quite well and with many more flowers I am sure to get plenty of beans for the season.

You can see that the vines are producing more flowers which means more beans potentially.  As long as they keep producing and flourishing I will be busy picking these vegetables.

I also mentioned that my onions are just about ready to be picked out of the ground now that the stems have fallen over.  This is the first sign that they are done for the year and need to be removed from the soil.  The ones in my totes have all fallen over while the ones in the garden are not quite done.  Many of them have fallen, but there are some that are still standing.

I could probably pick them this weekend at the same time that I pick my pole beans.  I will most likely dig them out either today or tomorrow.  The ones in the garden I will pick out the ones that have fell over and the ones that are still standing I will wait a little bit longer before I remove them from the soil.

Peppers are on the way and most of my plants are producing flowers which will lead to peppers that I can use for various foods.  I like using them for my tomato sauce that I make each year.  Having everything in tomato sauce come from the garden is a great way to utilize your vegetables.

My corn will probably take another couple of weeks before I see signs of production.  They are getting tall and they should soon be producing tassels and then silks which is the first sign that corn will be coming soon.  Right now they have not produced either, but it is still early in the season.  As long as I keep watering them everyday providing them with the water they need they will eventually begin to grow corn on the cob.

My fall plants are doing well at the moment and will be placing them in the garden in a few weeks.  I planted them a little bit later than I would have liked, but I think they still will make out and have enough time to get some broccoli and cabbage heads before the cold winter temperatures.
