Planting Indoors, Page 4

Alyssum and Dill The First Flowers Planted

The first planting of the year that is placed on the windowsill is alyssum and dill.  These two plants are great for the garden and they do not need that much attention.  I can easily place them in between rows attracting beneficial insects including bees to help my garden plants.

I plant them in large clear containers because they can easily grow next to each other without many problems.  They continually will produce flowers throughout the year as long as they get enough water.  This makes for a good food source for many types of insects that are helpful to any organic garden. Transplanted Flowers, Herbs, and Some More Tomatoes

Setting flowers into the garden is best done at the same time that you are planting everything else.  Usually I tend to plant them once I get all the other vegetables and fruits set into the ground.  They will take some time to produce the blooms that you need to attract bees and insects.  The summer is where you should see them flowering and continuous blooms will come.

As previously stated I had some tomatoes grown inside after the first batch had begun sprouting or didn’t sprout.  I have added them into the garden and now I only have just a couple of more left that will soon go out probably by next week at the latest.  I also have a few more flowers that will go into the garden as well. Onions Began Sprouting and More Seeds Planted

Today is a quick update on what has been happening in the garden and new seeds that have been planted inside.  As you know onions were planted about a couple of weeks ago during some of the warmer days that we had.  Onions love cooler temperatures and a moist soil.  Luckily the past week has provided them with the desired environment for them to grow rather quickly.

I also have some updates regarding the last of the beneficial flowers that I have planted indoors.  I always find it important to grow as much as you can in the beginning, but these plants are very quick to generate flowers and they can be used as an herb as well.

Some flowers that I planted earlier in the season have began sprouting and are starting to show signs of small blossoms.  If they start blooming inside that is fine because these types of flowers will bloom all year round.  This will produce enough food for the beneficial insects and bees that you are trying to attract and bring to your garden. Plant Progress and Some More Alyssum Added

I want to share with you some of the progress that I have been having with my plants and some that I have added in order to maximize my time.

So far my plants are doing really good and it will soon be time to leave them out overnight and then into the garden soil they will go soon after.  Right now during warm days I have been placing them outside on a table that can hold much of my early plantings.

I also added some more flowers to addition to the ones that I started growing a month ago.  Alyssum is one of those flowers that I love to grow as much as possible because of the numerous beneficial insects it attracts.  Bees love them lady beetles, flower flies, hover flies, and so much more. Some Updates on Plants I have Added to My Indoor Collection

I just wanted to update you on what has been going on indoors.  First of all I have started to plant celery for the first time.  I place them in 3 inch peat pots which I think is a great way to start off with something that I have never grown before.

I also planted some basil which is a delicious herb to have around during the summertime.  It is very delicious and is easy to store if you know exactly what you are doing.  This is all that I wanted to let you know about.  Both of these were placed under the fluorescent lights which will hopefully give them a kick start to sprouting very quickly.

What I Have Accomplished in The Past Couple of Days

The past couple of days have been pretty busy.  I have planted a few extra vegetables that I thought might be needed just in case others did not sprout or germinate.  I also added some more flowers to the mix and began getting ready to put the spinach into the ground.

This Friday I started getting the garden ready by cleaning up the debris that has collected on the ground including dead weeds, broccoli plants, leaves, etc.  Most of the debris from last season was cleared away the previous year so there should not be that much to clean up.  This also included removing the straw or lack there of from the strawberries. The Squash Vegetables Pumpkins and Zucchini Are Next On Our List

The last plants that I end up growing inside would be members of the squash family that includes pumpkins and zucchini.  I tend to grow them last because they happen to grow much faster than any others that I have including many of the flowers.  That is another reason why I use larger containers for them since their root structure can get pot bound real quick.

Last year I had placed them in smaller containers than what I usually use and they ended up almost dying.  One pumpkin plant did happen to fail when I placed them into the garden, but I was still able to get four pumpkins and a number of zucchini’s as well.  This year I want to make certain that they have enough time to grow and will have enough room in the pot I place them in. Second Phase of Vegetable Planting Indoors

Today I started another phase of vegetable planting that was needed due to some seeds not sprouting at all.  One thing that I would like to point out when growing plants inside is that you need to have patience.  This is something that I lack when it comes to growing any type of plant and it is one element that can help you in your own gardening.

Everything that I place under the lights usually takes about half the time that it would usually take if I had placed them in a windowsill.  Some plants I start with the lights some I don’t.  For instance the flowers I planted earlier in the season were started right in the windowsill.  Along with them were the sunflowers, watermelon, and tomatoes.  Everything else used the fluorescent lights which are a great help. More Flowers and Vegetables to Start Growing Indoors

It’s time to start growing more flowers that you need during the garden season including more vegetables as well.  I unfortunately ran out of room on the windowsill and I had to utilize a simple fluorescent light – which you can purchase at any hardware store – to get these plants up and flourishing.

The good news is that many of your plants will be ready when spring time comes around and all you will have to do is transplant them into the garden.  There are some plants which you cannot transplant including carrots, corn, beans, etc.  You should grow as many plants as you can before hand to have a better harvest.

Today I decided to grow some flowers and vegetables.  There were some flowers that I was not able to get to previously, but they can always be planted directly outdoors if I had ran out of room inside. (more…)

Eggplant, Peppers, and Tomatoes Can be Started Indoors

As you know we previously discussed planting watermelon and flowers indoors, but now you should know that there are more vegetables and fruits you can begin soon as well.  I would recommend peppers, eggplant, and tomatoes to be next on your list.

Eggplants are another one of those vegetables that can take quite a long time to mature or produce fruit.  I like to use the black beauty eggplant which are heirloom seeds that you can save at the end of the year.  They are able to ripen towards the end of the season, but if you plant them inside you can extend the season by a couple of months.  If you love eggplant now is the time to get them into containers right away.
