Doubling Up Planting Indoors

Last updated on

It is that time of the year when I need to rely on fluorescent lights to help in sprouting many of my seeds that I plant. With two 48 inch lights I can add many more seeds that I need to plant for a good head start to 2018. For now I am using just one light and have only planted flower seeds into small to medium sized plastic containers.

Some of the seeds I have planted include Queen Anne’s lace, a key lime marigold, some cilantro, and some bright light cosmos. Since flowers can withstand cooler weather better than some of my summer plants it is important to get them germinated right away. The earlier the better when it comes to flowers. Getting them to bud quickly is essential in my organic garden.

I also still have some wildflower seeds left from last year and I planted them in some large plastic containers since that seemed to work. I always stick with what works and I make sure not to fix what isn’t broken. Sometimes I would test certain seeds in different containers, but for the most part I stick with the best solution.

At the moment I am focusing on getting flowers sprouted and ready for the windowsill or possibly outside if the weather permits. I do need to use an entire light to get my tomatoes sprouted which should be coming up very soon. Most likely I will try to plant them sometime this week hopefully.

I can usually squeeze most of them in using just one fluorescent light, but sometimes there are one or two that I need to place on a windowsill because of the lack of room. I could use another light, but I think I would grow too much and I would run out of room for places to plant them.

For now I am just using two with one of them for flowers and one that will soon be used for planting all my tomato seeds, or at least as many as possible. Cherry, steakhouse, and Roma will be what I plant under these lights.
