Placed Sprouting Plants Outside and Blueberries Weeded

Today was one of the first days where you could tell that spring was in the air and warmer weather is right around the corner.  It was exciting to have warmer weather because this means much work needs to be done in order to prepare for the coming season.

One of the first things that I thought I should take care of would be the blueberries.  They are very simple to maintain and all they needed was a quick weed along with some raking of many leaves that had collected over the fall. (more…)

More Cucumbers and Flowers Planted

I had planted cucumbers about a couple of weeks ago into small black pots that would be perfect for them.  Unfortunately I only was able to plant three pots of them.  Today I decided to use the spare fluorescent light used for the spinach and plant some more cucumbers.

The spinach plants have been hardening outside for the past few weeks and they will not need any more fluorescent light and can now rely on the sun.  This extra one was used to plant cucumbers and more flowers. (more…)

Onions Planted on April 2 This Season

The first of April is usually when I begin planning on putting onions into the garden.  In fact I love placing them in totes which is how I grow onions from year to year with good success.

With cooler but warm enough weather for onions to survive right now was a perfect time to get them into totes.  I even planted some in the ground as well since I had plenty of onion bulbs left.

Sprouting Seeds and More Planted

This week has been quite interesting with all the sprouting of many of my seeds that were grown this past month.  I am finally seeing spinach beginning to grow and it only took the entire month of March to do so.  It would be better if they started sprouting a week or two ago, but it is better late than never.

Most of my flowers have began sprouting including sunflowers, calendula, Queen Anne’s lace, amaranthus, cosmos, dill, alyssum, and much more.  Both lettuce types have began sprouting as well. (more…)

Tomatoes, Peppers, and Eggplant Placed in Small Pots

Just wanted to let you know that I decided on planting tomatoes a little bit earlier than last season.  This year I want to make sure that I get plenty of Roma tomatoes that I can then use to make sauces that I can then store for the Winter.

I thought last years tomatoes were real good and instead of getting all new tomatoes I just purchased the same hybrid seeds I got last season.  This includes the Roma super sauce and Steakhouse varieties.  If it isn’t broken then don’t fix it is what I say. (more…)

Sunflower and Cosmos Seeds Planted

The more flowers in the garden the more chances you have of getting happy honeybees to pollinate your plants.  That is what I was thinking about today and sunflowers are the perfect ones to attract all types of bees including honeybees.

Cosmos are flowers that continuously grow throughout the season and will produce lovely blooms that are high in nectar and will be able to feed some of the most beneficial insects that you will receive. (more…)

Lettuce and Watermelon Planted Early

I actually decided on planting my watermelon seeds earlier than I usually do in order to get the best head start possible.  I will probably stick with three plants as long as three out of the six seeds I planted today sprout.

Carolina cross are some of the largest watermelons that you can grow and starting them inside is the only way that you can get a really good size watermelon.  I am also planting them in large green pots instead of using peat pots this year.  Something I am trying and I will see if it was worth the effort. Alyssum and Dill The First Flowers Planted

The first planting of the year that is placed on the windowsill is alyssum and dill.  These two plants are great for the garden and they do not need that much attention.  I can easily place them in between rows attracting beneficial insects including bees to help my garden plants.

I plant them in large clear containers because they can easily grow next to each other without many problems.  They continually will produce flowers throughout the year as long as they get enough water.  This makes for a good food source for many types of insects that are helpful to any organic garden. The Garden Season Has Started with the Planting of Spinach

The garden season is officially here and the first planting that starts the season is spinach.  Very easy to grow plants and great for cooler weather especially with the cold temperatures that I have been getting in my area.

Tons of snow and very chilly temperatures is why I have delayed the planting of spinach about a week later.  I usually start in the last month of February, but this year I decided on trying them the first week of March. (more…)

2015 and a New Set of Seeds

It is now another year and with the garden season coming here in the very near future it is time to start thinking about what to grow.  I try to begin each season by looking at what seeds were left from the season before and which ones I need to get right away.

First of all I always grow my spinach early in the season starting in February so these were something I need to get as soon as possible.  I get all my seeds at the same time in order to save money on shipping. (more…)
