Staking Tomatoes Using Stretch Ties

Last updated on

Normally I would stake my tomatoes much earlier in the year about the same time that I planted them in the ground or just shortly before or after.  This year I happened to do this a little later, but nevertheless my tomatoes are still growing very well and with extra support they will ripen much quicker.

I used to use old jeans and rip strips and use that for supporting my tomato plants.  This year I decided to try something a little different and see if this makes a difference in the quality and lifespan of my tomatoes plants and the fruit it produces.

This year I am using stretch ties that are able to stretch with the weight of the plant without cutting into it like twist ties can.  When the weight of the plant gets heavier it will expand allowing for an easy adjustment for the ties.  150 feet is included in each one of these rolls.

You can see how I used them on some of my tomato plants.  I have only staked the ones that were falling over or had several tomatoes for the time being.  I will stake the others hopefully by the end of the week they should all be done.

Staked Tomatoes

Here are some roma tomatoes that needed to be staked.

Last, some cherry tomatoes that are a little more difficult to tie because they are bushier than other tomatoes.
