I recently had planted nine of the strongest spinach plants into the garden last week and I had 11 that I wanted to place by the end of this week at the latest. Yesterday I completed putting the rest into the garden and only took about a couple of hours.
I probably could have waited a little bit longer for the plants to grow more roots in order to make it easier to take them out of the containers. Most of them seemed to come out pretty easily. (more…)
Just wanted to keep you up to date on my garden especially on the plant progress that many have gone through. They have been doing quite good over the past couple of weeks now that the sun is out more and the weather is definitely getting warmer.
It is still not time to plant them in the ground, but placing them outside is what I have been doing the past couple of weeks. When the time comes they will be ready to make the transition into the ground with ease. (more…)
I had planted cucumbers about a couple of weeks ago into small black pots that would be perfect for them. Unfortunately I only was able to plant three pots of them. Today I decided to use the spare fluorescent light used for the spinach and plant some more cucumbers.
The spinach plants have been hardening outside for the past few weeks and they will not need any more fluorescent light and can now rely on the sun. This extra one was used to plant cucumbers and more flowers. (more…)
This week has been quite interesting with all the sprouting of many of my seeds that were grown this past month. I am finally seeing spinach beginning to grow and it only took the entire month of March to do so. It would be better if they started sprouting a week or two ago, but it is better late than never.
Most of my flowers have began sprouting including sunflowers, calendula, Queen Anne’s lace, amaranthus, cosmos, dill, alyssum, and much more. Both lettuce types have began sprouting as well. (more…)
I actually decided on planting my watermelon seeds earlier than I usually do in order to get the best head start possible. I will probably stick with three plants as long as three out of the six seeds I planted today sprout.
Carolina cross are some of the largest watermelons that you can grow and starting them inside is the only way that you can get a really good size watermelon. I am also planting them in large green pots instead of using peat pots this year. Something I am trying and I will see if it was worth the effort. (more…)
The first planting of the year that is placed on the windowsill is alyssum and dill. These two plants are great for the garden and they do not need that much attention. I can easily place them in between rows attracting beneficial insects including bees to help my garden plants.
I plant them in large clear containers because they can easily grow next to each other without many problems. They continually will produce flowers throughout the year as long as they get enough water. This makes for a good food source for many types of insects that are helpful to any organic garden. (more…)
This has been a very busy memorial weekend especially for garden work that had to be completed this past week. First of all with good weather it was time to begin transplanted the bulk of my plants that were ready to get out of their restricted containers.
I only was able to plant about half of the tomatoes that I grew inside because some of the later seeds that were grown are not ready to be removed from their pots. I like to wait until the roots of the plant actually reaches the bottom of the pot and they wrap around all the soil. This makes it easier for the plant to be removed and it will come out in one piece as you can see below.
Today I planted the first seeds of bush beans and corn into the garden. It was a cloudy day but it still was warm enough to get them into the ground. I didn’t plant an entire row instead I just planted the first set of corn and with some extra room I planted some bush beans.
I wasn’t planning on growing bush beans because I wasn’t sure I would have extra room. What I did was plant them at the end of where my pole beans are going to go because there is plenty of room in this area. Basically where the pole beans end are where the bush beans will begin. (more…)
Today is a quick update on what has been happening in the garden and new seeds that have been planted inside. As you know onions were planted about a couple of weeks ago during some of the warmer days that we had. Onions love cooler temperatures and a moist soil. Luckily the past week has provided them with the desired environment for them to grow rather quickly.
I also have some updates regarding the last of the beneficial flowers that I have planted indoors. I always find it important to grow as much as you can in the beginning, but these plants are very quick to generate flowers and they can be used as an herb as well.
Some flowers that I planted earlier in the season have began sprouting and are starting to show signs of small blossoms. If they start blooming inside that is fine because these types of flowers will bloom all year round. This will produce enough food for the beneficial insects and bees that you are trying to attract and bring to your garden. (more…)
I want to share with you some of the progress that I have been having with my plants and some that I have added in order to maximize my time.
So far my plants are doing really good and it will soon be time to leave them out overnight and then into the garden soil they will go soon after. Right now during warm days I have been placing them outside on a table that can hold much of my early plantings.
I also added some more flowers to addition to the ones that I started growing a month ago. Alyssum is one of those flowers that I love to grow as much as possible because of the numerous beneficial insects it attracts. Bees love them lady beetles, flower flies, hover flies, and so much more. (more…)
