Last of the Spinach Transplanted to Garden

I recently had planted nine of the strongest spinach plants into the garden last week and I had 11 that I wanted to place by the end of this week at the latest.  Yesterday I completed putting the rest into the garden and only took about a couple of hours.

I probably could have waited a little bit longer for the plants to grow more roots in order to make it easier to take them out of the containers.  Most of them seemed to come out pretty easily. (more…)

Removing Screens from Onions and Plant Progress

Just wanted to keep you up to date on my garden especially on the plant progress that many have gone through.  They have been doing quite good over the past couple of weeks now that the sun is out more and the weather is definitely getting warmer.

It is still not time to plant them in the ground, but placing them outside is what I have been doing the past couple of weeks.  When the time comes they will be ready to make the transition into the ground with ease. (more…)

Spinach Transplanted and Onions Beginning to Sprout Today

Some good news on the onion front they have begun to start sprouting this week and I noticed this today.  They probably began sprouting earlier in the week, but I didn’t have a look at them until today.  Both the onions in totes and the ones in the garden are both sprouting.

I wasn’t so sure how long it would take for the ones in the ground to begin growing because it is much different soil than what is in the totes.  I am glad that they have started growing at the same time and I can easily compare their growth rates through the summer. (more…)

Placed Sprouting Plants Outside and Blueberries Weeded

Today was one of the first days where you could tell that spring was in the air and warmer weather is right around the corner.  It was exciting to have warmer weather because this means much work needs to be done in order to prepare for the coming season.

One of the first things that I thought I should take care of would be the blueberries.  They are very simple to maintain and all they needed was a quick weed along with some raking of many leaves that had collected over the fall. (more…)

Onions Planted on April 2 This Season

The first of April is usually when I begin planning on putting onions into the garden.  In fact I love placing them in totes which is how I grow onions from year to year with good success.

With cooler but warm enough weather for onions to survive right now was a perfect time to get them into totes.  I even planted some in the ground as well since I had plenty of onion bulbs left.

Sprouting Seeds and More Planted

This week has been quite interesting with all the sprouting of many of my seeds that were grown this past month.  I am finally seeing spinach beginning to grow and it only took the entire month of March to do so.  It would be better if they started sprouting a week or two ago, but it is better late than never.

Most of my flowers have began sprouting including sunflowers, calendula, Queen Anne’s lace, amaranthus, cosmos, dill, alyssum, and much more.  Both lettuce types have began sprouting as well. (more…)

The Garden Season Has Started with the Planting of Spinach

The garden season is officially here and the first planting that starts the season is spinach.  Very easy to grow plants and great for cooler weather especially with the cold temperatures that I have been getting in my area.

Tons of snow and very chilly temperatures is why I have delayed the planting of spinach about a week later.  I usually start in the last month of February, but this year I decided on trying them the first week of March. (more…)

Tilling Garden, Weeding Blueberries and Spinach, and Mulching Onions

It has been quite a long time since I wrote a post on my blog and since then it has been a busy week for gardening.  With the weather getting much warmer and all my plants are enjoying the outside weather it was time to get started with tilling the garden.

I usually start tilling when the weather gets consistently warmer and usually is in the beginning of May.  It all depends mainly on the weather especially if there has been much rain.  I don’t like to till when the ground is too wet and is better to wait for the soil to dry a little bit.  A moist layered soil is fine conditions for proper tilling.  Take a look at these pictures of my tilled garden. Onion and Spinach Update for May 5

From time to time I will take pictures of my plants and post them on this website for you to see what they look like and how they are growing.  Since these are the only two plants that are in the garden so far that is what I will discuss in this post.

Once I plant more in the garden I will be giving updates on most of my plants, but only when they receive fruit or other events happen with them.  It would not be wise to post pictures of these plants every day.  I will however do an update at least once a week and when fruit starts to grow then the frequency will increase.  For now let’s stick to onions and spinach. Picking Spinach Leaves, Weeding, and Adding Wood Ash

Yesterday I decided to pick some of the spinach leaves that were getting quite large outside.  I like picking the leaves when they get large enough that they can be used for a sandwich.  You can pick them small and toss them into a salad, but I prefer larger darker leaves rather than small paler ones.

One thing you need to keep in mind is not picking too many leaves because this could cause them to go to seed very quickly and that would end your spinach season.  So to prevent this from happening I always leave a couple of large leaves on the plant.

This way you are not shocking them with removing too much of the leaves.  As long as you keep feeding them they will continue to produce delicious green foliage.  Here are some pictures I took of before and after cutting the leaves. (more…)
