Time to Spring into Action

Now that spring weather is warming up it is time to get gardening right away. Although the month of May was not very cooperative in terms of temperatures June seems to be much more normal. I have pretty much planted everything into the garden from my dill and alyssum to my tomatoes and my spring crop. There were a couple of rain days recently and I wanted to take advantage of that so I moved as fast as I could in order to get all to most of my plants into the ground. There are just a couple of tomatoes that I will have to add to the garden, but for the most part everything is either planted or sowed.

May: The Busiest Month of the Garden Season

May is probably one of the busiest months of the garden season because this is when most of your plants are transplanted, seeds are sown directly into the garden soil, the rest of the garden is being tilled, and even strawberries are starting to turn red and ripening for a June harvest. Right now all I have left to put into the garden are my pepper plants, eggplant, and hopefully some melon seeds into the soil as long as there is still some room after my transplants are settled into the ground.

Strawberry Harvest

Three Strawberry Harvests Completed This Year

I have finally placed all my plants into the ground with an exception of a couple which will be placed very soon before the end of June. The only successful harvest at the moment has been my strawberries. I have been picking some late broccoli as well, but these are just a few heads and florets. I have some good lettuce that I will start picking soon I just wanted to be sure that the leaves will not turn out bitter. I made certain to do a few consecutive watering with lime to sweeten the soil.

Wonderful Harvests Continuing with Strawberries, Lettuce, and More

The garden has been quite well and it looks like I am just about done planting all my summer crop plants for the season. I have already had several harvests of different fruit and vegetables and I have been enjoying their flavor through the past month. There are just a few things I need to do like stake my tomatoes, possibly add mulch to my corn and other plants that would benefit from it, and set up my bean trellis which shouldn’t take that long.

June Bearing Strawberries Ready for Picking

The gardening season is upon us and with June having just arrived this also means June bearing strawberries are beginning to ripen. Now that these strawberries have turned color it is time to start picking them and enjoy their sweet flavor. This marks the very first harvest for the year. I have many other plants that will need to be harvested and I will discuss that in this article.

Fall Plants and a Few Eggplants are all That is Left to Harvest

This past week it has been getting cooler and some cold fall temperatures should be arriving before the week is over. Fall temps are now here and it is time to slowly close down the garden. I still have fall plants such as broccoli, kale, celery, and brussel sprouts that I will continue to care for and harvest. I even have a few eggplants that will be picked very shortly. For the most part the gardening season is coming to an end for this year. (more…)

Strawberries are Ready Along With Radishes

It looks like the very first harvest of the season comes from my strawberries and radishes. It is the month of June and since these are June bearing strawberries it makes sense that they would be ready during this month. Radishes could have been picked earlier, but I still get some good sized vegetables from yesterday’s harvest. (more…)

Getting the Net on the Blueberries and Soon Strawberries

It looks like this might be a long post since I have not written one in quite awhile and I want to keep you up to speed with my garden progress. I have not planted everything into the garden just yet, but I only have a few more seeds and transplants left. I plan on finishing this week, weather permitting of course. Let’s get into what has been going on in my garden. (more…)

Strawberry Plants

The Second Year for Strawberry Plants

With weather and temps warming up it was about time to remove the straw from all my strawberry plants and do a little bit of weeding as well.  All the plants survived the winter and most of them are growing well and hopefully will start producing flowers within a month or so for a June harvest. Straw on Strawberries

Getting the Last of the Season Activities Completed for Next Year

I think this season was pretty good especially with plenty of lettuce in the early spring/summer along with some new additions including snow peas as well as radishes. Cherry tomatoes were plentiful as well as Roma tomatoes which led to plenty of sauces and salsas. Now it is time to clean up the garden and place straw on the appropriate plants to protect them through the cold winter. (more…)
