The Second Year for Strawberry Plants

Last updated on

With weather and temps warming up it was about time to remove the straw from all my strawberry plants and do a little bit of weeding as well.  All the plants survived the winter and most of them are growing well and hopefully will start producing flowers within a month or so for a June harvest.

The second year for strawberries usually is when they start to produce flowers and fruit.  Last year was the first year planting June bearing strawberries, so hopefully this second year will be a positive one.

Straw Removed From Strawberry Plants

For now I just wanted to get the straw off the plants and loosen the soil around them as well.  Tomorrow I will give them a little touch up and water them with a good first soaking of the season.  I will also place the straw around the plants to keep the weeds down.

With the warm weather it was about time to place most of my plants outside including tomatoes and all my flowers.  This way I can place my melons, eggplants, and peppers in the bright windowsill to get some sun for the first time this year.

Alyssum and Dill Outside for First Time This Year

This was the first time that I placed these plants outside.  I could have placed them earlier because they are tolerant to cool weather.

I will leave them outside until the sun goes down which will happen real soon for the day.  This is the process of hardening off your plants before leaving them out all night and then finally into the garden.

Everything looks good for now and I am just waiting for my peas and radishes to sprout.  I should begin seeing some sprouting happening in the next week or so.

My onions are starting to produce stems and are ready to have the screens removed from them.  I will keep the screens on until most of the onions have a stem growing from them.

I hope to start planting my spinach seeds this week and many other cool weather seeds.  I plan on weeding my blueberries as well now that they are getting buds.
