With weather and temps warming up it was about time to remove the straw from all my strawberry plants and do a little bit of weeding as well. All the plants survived the winter and most of them are growing well and hopefully will start producing flowers within a month or so for a June harvest. (more…)
I am now getting some more tomatoes that are coming from most of my plants. There are only a couple that don’t have any fruit yet, but they do have flowers which should bring some fruit very soon.
As I can see it looks like I am getting steakhouse tomatoes along with some cherry tomatoes. I am probably getting some Roma tomatoes, but I am not quite certain which ones they are. I would say in about a week I should know if I have any Roma tomatoes growing. (more…)
I have been pretty much weeding the entire garden this week and I wanted to wait until I completed that before writing another post, but instead I will give you a quick update on the garden instead.
I started with picking some of my Ruby glow lettuce earlier in the week and that was very exciting since last year I didn’t get as much as I would have liked. The first harvest I had from them yielded me 65 leaves. This is just short from my iceberg lettuce harvest. (more…)
Another busy week now that garden season is in full swing with transplanting, planting seeds, weeding, feeding, mulching and now staking my tomatoes. I like to stake my tomatoes as soon as possible; preferably right when I transplant them to the garden.
Although I didn’t stake them right when I transplanted them I did in fact place them in shortly after they were added into the garden soil. I like to put the stakes as close to the plant as possible so that it will make it easier to tie them to the stakes. (more…)
I thought I would wait to write a post once I had finished weeding my broccoli and had some more harvesting to share. This would include the last cantaloupe, some more peppers, and again more beans. I also took two days to fully weed my broccoli plants.
After a couple of days of rain I knew that my broccoli would do quite well, but on the other hand the weeds would shoot up like crazy. That is exactly what happened and I wanted to make sure that they didn’t affect the growth of my broccoli plants. (more…)
Today is just more of an update on the garden since it has been at least a week since my last post. This week has been crazily busy especially with all the rain and the weeds growing in the garden. I have had to work in the garden most of the week trying to remove all the weeds that I could.
All I have left to weed would be the tomatoes and some other small areas. I will begin mulching some plants which might include corn and maybe beans. It all depends how much mulch I am able to collect this week. (more…)
Just wanted to update you on what has been going on with my garden over the past week. So far I have only been picking my black seeded Simpson lettuce at the moment which is a great iceberg type lettuce. It The lettuce has been growing quite well and the leaves have grown to large sizes.
I am very happy about this because last season I didn’t grow any and I definitely missed out on their great flavor. I still have not picked any of the ruby glow hybrid leaves yet, but they are not growing as fast as my iceberg lettuce. Granted these are romaine type leaves and I will have to pick them differently than my iceberg type leaves. (more…)
One of the good things that happened this week was a harvesting of just a few strawberries. I wasn’t sure if there were going to be many berries this season, but there was enough to have the first harvest. Only a handful were picked and there are still plenty left on the plants.
The next harvest I am sure will occur sometime this week either tomorrow or sometime during the weekend. Hopefully there will be many more than the first harvest. The first is always a small amount, but the second or third time is when you reach the peak of strawberry picking season. (more…)
As any gardener will tell you weeding is one of the most important and time consuming tasks that a gardener has to take. Once you get the hang of weeding properly it becomes so much easier and it will not take that much time.
Unfortunately this is something that has to be done from time to time even if you have placed a layer of thick mulch or black plastic to prevent weeds from growing. Weeds will literally grow anywhere. (more…)
Today was one of the first days where you could tell that spring was in the air and warmer weather is right around the corner. It was exciting to have warmer weather because this means much work needs to be done in order to prepare for the coming season.
One of the first things that I thought I should take care of would be the blueberries. They are very simple to maintain and all they needed was a quick weed along with some raking of many leaves that had collected over the fall. (more…)
