Using Coconut Husk Pellets for Planting Summer Seed Crop

I tried planting seeds into coconut husks last season, but they didn’t seem to work that well. This was probably due to using old husk pellets that I had for about five years. This year I bought brand new pellets and they expanded like they are supposed to and have planted a variety of summer crop seeds into all 72 plant cells. This particular tray is able to water the soil and seeds automatically with the proper amount of moisture per cell.

This season I decided on cutting back on the number of tomatoes I would be planting into the garden. Instead of growing a bunch of super sauce tomatoes I want to plants a variety of different kinds of tomato seeds. Today I planted big boy, supersteak, cherry tomatoes as usual, a few supersauce seeds, Rutgers, and a Burpee sandwich slicer tomato. I still have about 23 tomatoes that will hopefully sprout, but all different kinds.

I also planted plenty of peppers as well since last season not many of them had sprouted and when placed into larger pots some of them did not last. I have planted some habaneras, juniper, Carolina reaper, Charleston peppers, Chinese giant, and one type of red pepper instead of just plain green. I look forward to having a chance to get some Carolina reaper peppers since I didn’t get any last season which was very disappointing. Hopefully these pellets will give them a much better head start.

I also did plant some cooler weather seeds, but not many of them. Since I have some of them already growing underneath fluorescent lights I decided on growing a few that I thought I would like to be harvesting this year. I planted only six cells worth of seeds that include Vivian, king crimson, and burgundy which the last two are both red types of lettuce.

Along with the above seeds I did plant 12 cells full of cucumbers since last year most of them perished and need to make up for last year’s poor performance. Five cells of eggplants and a few cells of broccoli that is able to withstand the heat of the summer were also added to these cells.
