The first phase of transplanting spring crops into the garden started earlier in the week with spinach, some lettuce, and a few Brassica plants. I still have a whole tray full of various plants (mostly lettuce) that I plan to get into the soil before the week is over. Radish and pea seeds have sprouted and I will start thinning them out very soon and possibly weeding them.

Sorry for the long period for a blog post, but I have plenty of things to discuss. This month has brought many rain storms and really windy days and made it difficult to till some of the garden soil and get some spring seeds planted. I finally had a good day to get the soil mixed this week and decided to plant peas, radishes, and sunflowers today even though it was cloudy, rainy, and windy. I couldn’t wait any longer to get these seeds into the ground.
I have been picking all of my tomatoes for the past month with the cherry tomato plants continuing to produce with flowers and tons of fruit. Last week I had picked over three hundred cherry tomatoes from just one harvest. I thought that was a lot until today when I happened to pick just under 500 of them! The funny thing is that there are still many plants out there with many more cherry tomatoes to pick. (more…)
This past week has been more about tomatoes than anything else in the garden. I have been picking tons of cherry tomatoes, some Roma tomatoes that were made into sauce, and several steakhouse tomatoes that weigh about one pound or more each. I also picked the first two eggplants of the season along with some beans and a couple of cucumbers. Let’s take a look at all my garden produce harvested this week. (more…)
It seems that it is about that time where harvesting becomes almost a daily venture. I would say that I have been picking all tomato types this week at least every other day. Most of my tomatoes are starting to turn and ripen along with beans and cucumbers. The large Roma and steakhouse tomatoes have finally started to bring in small harvests at the moment. Soon I will have plenty of Roma tomatoes to get some sauce going for winter storage. (more…)
I have been picking mostly cherry tomatoes this entire week since most of them are at the stage of ripening. They usually come rather quickly and are the first tomatoes to be picked and continued to be harvested throughout the season. That is correct most of my corn is now ready to be picked while others still need just a little bit more time. Today was actually the start of harvests from corn, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Now that most of my blueberries have been picked it is now time to focus on other fruits and vegetables that may be ready for harvesting. (more…)
It looks like many of my fruit and vegetables are starting to appear within the garden and some harvests will have to be done real soon. I have already harvested a zucchini last week and I have a few more in the garden that are just about done. For the past couple of weeks I have been picking blueberries until the season is over for them. At the moment there are still plenty of berries left even though I have picked over ten pounds of them from this year’s harvests. Soon there will be harvests from my corn, zucchini, tomatoes, and possibly pumpkins and melons. (more…)
With spring crops ending with little left to pick it is time to move on to blueberries and other warmer weather crops. I am using a summer hybrid broccoli that is supposed to be able to withstand the warm hot summer temperatures. I plan on growing and harvesting them all season long making sure that they do not flower or go to seed. (more…)
