It Looks Like The Peak of Tomato Season Has Arrived

Last updated on

I have been picking all of my tomatoes for the past month with the cherry tomato plants continuing to produce with flowers and tons of fruit. Last week I had picked over three hundred cherry tomatoes from just one harvest. I thought that was a lot until today when I happened to pick just under 500 of them! The funny thing is that there are still many plants out there with many more cherry tomatoes to pick.

Over the past week I have made tomato sauce using my Roma tomatoes, salsa from cherry tomatoes, and I have been using my steakhouse tomatoes for BLT sandwiches. I picked thirty pounds of Roma tomatoes last week which is plenty to make enough sauce to fill several quart jars.

I have been talking about my tomatoes for quite some time. Today I want to discuss everything else that has been going on in the garden. For instance I have a few pumpkins that are just about ready to be picked. With October just around the corner they will be picked very soon and carved for Halloween hopefully.

Cucumbers have been a little slow this season, but now they are picking up speed and are producing plenty of flowers and fruit. I should be picking plenty of them within the next couple of weeks or so. I am hoping that the warm weather will last through October in order to extend the growing season of most of my plants.

The third and final eggplant for now has been picked. The plants at the moment are probably done for the season, but with the flowers they are producing it is possible that some of them might get another fruit. Since there is only about a month or so left in the season they might not be able to get a large one and instead several small ones at the most.

Melons are just about done for the season and my watermelon looks like it is ready for harvesting. The crimson sweet watermelon was the first into the garden and was from one of my peat pot transplants. I have other plants that are growing honeydews and cantaloupes as well. I am just saying that the first melon to be picked will most likely be the round watermelon.
