Time Has Come for Tomatoes to Change Colors

Last updated on

Cherry tomatoes came first and now both of my Roma and steakhouse tomatoes are now on their way to a ripening pinkish red color. There are only a few of them changing colors, but soon the rest will follow. With plenty of sunshine they will turn much faster and will be harvested earlier.

At the moment they are still quite light in color, but within a week or so I should be picking the first Roma and steakhouse tomatoes of the season. Then I can start enjoying my bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches along with sauce from my Roma tomatoes.

I am getting a few melons from my cantaloupes and a couple of watermelons beginning to grow as well. Right now it looks like just one watermelon from a vine and there are a few on another plant, but I am not sure which ones have been pollinated yet.

I have one cantaloupe plant that is actually growing three fruits on the vine. Once I knew it had one I should have removed the others, but they were too far along and that might have been unwise to do for the plants health. I also have a separate cantaloupe that has recently started growing and somehow I missed it this past week.

Corn is starting to look good and I would say that picking them is real close and this week might be the time for harvesting them or at least the first of the season. I am hoping to get at least one good sized ear from each stalk, but some might have two which is just as good and hopefully just as delicious.

My first eggplant appeared this past week and my other plants are producing flowers. This is the first sign of life from my eggplant plants. They started off a little slow due to the cool May weather, but finally came back after some warm weather that they needed.

My zucchini plants are starting to produce some more vegetables after the first phase of harvesting. I call this the second phase or the recharge phase which should bring some more zucchinis to the table in a couple weeks or less.

A couple of pickle cucumbers and some cherry tomatoes were harvested this evening. This seems to be what I will be harvesting for some time until my tomatoes and corn are fully ripe for picking.
