Year End Broccoli and Brussel Sprout Harvesting

Now that the cold weather is here and a frost has pretty much eliminated most of the garden I now am focusing on harvesting broccoli and brussel sprouts.  I also have a couple of kale plants which I may start harvesting, but they were planted later than my broccoli and may not get big enough to pick before a ground freeze occurs.   Strawberries are also done and they are now covered with straw for the winter along with my rhubarb.

Busy Gardening Year Coming this Season

I purchased most of my seeds at the beginning of the year back in January in order to get ahead and not have to worry about them now or during the springtime. There are a few things that I have not purchased such as bulbs which I will get on April 1 or somewhere near this date. I am also hoping to get some plants such as raspberries and maybe grapes to plant this year.

First Row Digging for Peas and Radishes

I have only planted my onions outside, but today it was about time to get some more spring stuff in the ground.  Peas and radishes usually grow well together and I always put them in the same row.  The weather is still cool, but these plants will be able to tolerate these types of temperatures. Flowers Blooming and Spring Plants Coming to Their End

I wanted to give an update to my garden and what has been going on for the past couple of weeks.  So far I have harvested all my spring plants including lettuce, radishes, and snow peas.  My radishes are all done along with my peas, and all that is left is my lettuce for now. (more…)

Several Plantings and a Harvest in the Past Two Days

For the past couple of days I have been focusing on getting all my transplants into the garden including peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, pickle cucumbers, and the last of my honeydew melons.  I also needed to plant at least one row of carrot seeds. (more…)

Three More Plants Moved Into the Garden This Weekend

I was hoping to get as many plants into the garden as possible today, because there is going to be some rain coming very soon.  I find it is best to get them into the garden quickly so they can adjust quickly to the soil and get some free rain with it as well. (more…)

Getting Ready for Transplanting Plants Into the Garden

It is that time of the year when I begin transplanting everything that I have grown indoors into the garden.  Weather has definitely warmed up and a short heat wave came through this week making it the perfect time for placing all my plants outside and soon into the garden. (more…)

Removing Some of My Radish and Pea Plants

I won’t be removing all of the plants, but I will be basically eliminate some of them to make room for the strongest in the row.  Luckily I don’t have to remove as much because both plants do not need that much room to grow and thrive. (more…)

New Seeds and Plants to Grow for 2017

It is the beginning of 2017 and it is time to start thinking about what seeds or plants you would like to grow.  This year I have some new seeds and plants that I ordered and am going to try out for the first time.

I decided on getting a few different seeds including snow peas, radishes, and two different varieties of lettuce.  I also am going to try celery again which I would like to have fresh rather than getting it from the store. (more…)

The Garden Season Has Started with the Planting of Spinach

The garden season is officially here and the first planting that starts the season is spinach.  Very easy to grow plants and great for cooler weather especially with the cold temperatures that I have been getting in my area.

Tons of snow and very chilly temperatures is why I have delayed the planting of spinach about a week later.  I usually start in the last month of February, but this year I decided on trying them the first week of March. (more…)
