Some of the Last Vegetables to Harvest Before Summer Season is Over
Last updated onNow that it is the month of October it is time to start focusing on the fall season and finishing up on the summer crops. Production in the summer crops have mostly stopped, but there are some vegetables and fruits that need to be picked before the first frost. Peppers, eggplants, and some tomatoes are what is left from this summer season. Carrots are also another crop that needs to be harvested which usually happens later in the fall.
With the summer over it and the warmer weather plants such as watermelons, cantaloupes, honeydew, pumpkins, and others it was time to remove what was left on these plants or vines. The last one that I needed to harvest was my watermelon. I only received one this season and it was a decent size and will probably last a couple of weeks once it is sliced open. For now I have left it in the refrigerator and will soon start cutting it and enjoying the juicy sweet flavor hopefully.
Peppers are another vegetable that I need to finish picking. At the moment my plants are still growing and some of them have some flowers, but I don’t think they will actually pollinate or produce any more vegetables. There are still a few good sized peppers on these plants that I will harvest very soon. So far I have been picking them pretty consistently and hope to get some more before the season is done.
Eggplants on the other hand have been harvested quite often this season. With 28 plants I should be collecting them every single week which has been happening this year. With all the eggplants I have picked this season I still have many more outside that I will be picking before the first frost hopefully.
Tomatoes are still growing, but they are coming from one beefsteak tomato plant. All my Romas and cherry tomato plants are done for the season. I am just picking good sized beefsteak tomatoes from one plant that is left in the garden and hope to pick just a few more that are still growing on this plant.
