New Seeds and Plants to Grow for 2017

It is the beginning of 2017 and it is time to start thinking about what seeds or plants you would like to grow.  This year I have some new seeds and plants that I ordered and am going to try out for the first time.

I decided on getting a few different seeds including snow peas, radishes, and two different varieties of lettuce.  I also am going to try celery again which I would like to have fresh rather than getting it from the store. (more…)

Thanksgiving is Not The Same Without Home Grown Carrots

The very last summer plants that I harvest last are carrots.  They have been in the ground the entire summer and most of the Fall.  I like to leave them in the ground because the ground makes for a good storage area.

I have been picking some cabbage lately and a few more pieces of broccoli.  All I have left are a couple of cabbage plants and whatever broccoli I get from now until the ground freezes. (more…)

Frost Officially Ended Summer Season

Just recently we received a small to light frost that ended the season for most of my summer plants.  I did have only a few harvests of the last peppers and one eggplant.  Now that we have had many consecutive days of cold weather the plants are now gone except for cabbage, broccoli, and kale. (more…)

Broccoli and Kale Starting to Come Through

It looks like my fall crops are doing quite well now that I have picked several kale leaves and heads of broccoli.  I only started harvesting broccoli heads a few days ago, but I have been picking kale leaves for a couple of weeks.  Today will be the third harvest of kale for the season. (more…)

Biggest Watermelon Picked Along with Kale, Peppers, and More

Getting the most out of the garden is the most important part of gardening.  This season I think I did just that with all the fruits and vegetables that I have picked and still harvesting.  With the largest watermelon that I have ever grown I think I have definitely accomplished my objective.

I don’t have much vegetables left except for mainly my fall crops.  I have been picking my kale lately and they are growing very large leaves which will make for some great kale soup this winter.  I have been making sure to store them in order to use them later. (more…)

Picking the First of My Fall Kale Crop

Now that it is October and fall is officially here it is time to start focusing on my cooler weather plants.  Today was a great day for picking kale and most of the plants had very large leaves that needed to be harvested right away.

I am pretty much done with my summer plants and again the last thing that is out there is the last watermelon that I need to pick.  I will be picking it before the weekend so make sure to check back and find out when I finally harvest this last melon. (more…)

Cleaning Up the Garden with Two More Watermelons Picked

Well I decided that today was a good day to start cleaning up the garden and start removing all my corn stalks, sunflowers, and many vine plants such as cucumbers and cantaloupes.  I like to do this before the cold weather and temperatures arrive.

I also did pick a couple of watermelons today that were finally ready after a couple of months of growing.  There is still one more which I plan on picking in the next couple of weeks hopefully.  Once I pick the last melon then it should be time for picking my fall crop. (more…)

Cantaloupes, Tomatoes, Peppers, and Last of Pole Beans

It looks like the season is coming to an end with not many fruits and vegetables left to pick.  I have a couple of eggplants, peppers, and some tomatoes still growing, but for the most part it is pretty much done for 2016.

The good news is that I have a fall harvest of broccoli, kale, and cabbage to look forward to.  I also still have three watermelons in the garden that are going to need to be harvested real soon as well.  I would guess that I will be picking them sometime this month at the latest hopefully. (more…)

The Last Summer Harvests of 2016

It is that time of the year where the harvests are getting smaller and smaller and cleanup of most of the garden will commence.  I still have a few melons, tomatoes, and eggplants still growing, but for the most part they will not be that big of a harvest.

The good news is that now we are going into the fall where my broccoli, cabbage, and kale can thrive in the cool weather.  I will be soon starting to pick harvests from them.  I will give them another month before I actually start thinking about harvesting them. (more…)

The Last Large Harvest of Pole Beans

It looks like most of my garden plants are winding down and no longer producing any more flowers or fruits.  My tomatoes are probably the last plants that are still growing fruit and I think I have just a few more harvests from them.

My bean plants are pretty much done for the season and today I just picked the last large harvest of pole beans.  It wasn’t as big as past years, but it is definitely a good amount to store over the winter. (more…)
