One Last Spring Crop Left to be Transplanted and Some Summer Seeds Planted

Last updated on

Weather for the month of May has been rather cold for transplanting summer crops such as tomatoes and peppers. It has been good for planting cold weather crops such as potatoes, onions, spinach, peas, radishes, sunflowers, dill, alyssum, lettuce, and broccoli. All these plants are now in the garden and the last spring crop that needs to be transplanted to the garden would be carrots. These are growing in peat pots so planting them should be quick and easy.

I am not worried about planting my carrots in the garden a little later than usual because they do not take that long to mature. In fact, it is entirely possible to plant to crops each year due to their early maturity. I have found that two thirty foot rows of carrots is plenty to last the entire Winter season. I will probably be planting my carrots very soon along with planting my pole beans at the same time.

I grew my spinach plants in large pvc pipes and started them inside for a head start. Since spinach plants have a long tap root or central root they need plenty of space in order for them to grow well and avoid them from going to seed. These pvc pipes seemed to do the trick and next season I will probably plant many more seeds using this method.

I planted a few lettuce seeds this season and was able to get a few good plants that I added to the garden. I am glad I got at least one red type lettuce which happens to be one of my favorite types of romaine lettuce. It adds more color to a typical salad and the large leaves can be used for delicious sandwiches. I also have a few green ones as well which I hope to start harvesting by June.

I finally planted two rows of corn Thursday since it was going to be good weather this weekend. I just planted the same seeds I did last season since I had plenty of them left over. I was hoping to plant my bean seeds, but unfortunately ran out of time and I still have to put up the bean trellis before I can actually plant the seeds for my beans.
