Cutting Potatoes and Placing them in Rows in the Garden

Now that it is the middle of April and soil is no longer frozen it is time to till part of the garden and add some cool spring crops. Three things were added to the garden yesterday. These include seed potatoes, peas, and radishes. These three crops are always sown directly into the garden and are not normally transplanted from pots or containers. I will probably start adding my spinach and lettuce plants into the garden next. These crops were grown indoors first and they have been outside for quite some time and are just about ready to be transplanted.

Later Planting for Corn and Some Lettuce

By now I would have most if not all of the garden tilled at this time. I like tilling the entire garden in one or two days so that I can start planting seeds and transplanting most of my indoor plants outside. This season has not been typical and has been still too cool to place everything into the garden. This is good for my cool weather plants that I recently placed in the garden, but I am still trying to harden off all my others before placing them permanently into the ground.

Potatoes Planted in 20 Foot Row

Potato Planting and Some Extra Spring Crop Seeds Added to Garden

Although potatoes should be planted a little bit earlier in the month of April they still have time to grow and possibly get a harvest for the summer. Weather conditions are still cool and wet which should help them out before the hot months of summer arrives. I was able to get a twenty foot row with just five pounds of seed potatoes. This should be enough for the season as long as they take to the soil well.

Planting In the Rain and Update on Outdoor Garden Plants

Sorry for the long period for a blog post, but I have plenty of things to discuss. This month has brought many rain storms and really windy days and made it difficult to till some of the garden soil and get some spring seeds planted. I finally had a good day to get the soil mixed this week and decided to plant peas, radishes, and sunflowers today even though it was cloudy, rainy, and windy. I couldn’t wait any longer to get these seeds into the ground.

Getting the Net on the Blueberries and Soon Strawberries

It looks like this might be a long post since I have not written one in quite awhile and I want to keep you up to speed with my garden progress. I have not planted everything into the garden just yet, but I only have a few more seeds and transplants left. I plan on finishing this week, weather permitting of course. Let’s get into what has been going on in my garden. (more…)

First Row Digging for Peas and Radishes

I have only planted my onions outside, but today it was about time to get some more spring stuff in the ground.  Peas and radishes usually grow well together and I always put them in the same row.  The weather is still cool, but these plants will be able to tolerate these types of temperatures. Flowers Blooming and Spring Plants Coming to Their End

I wanted to give an update to my garden and what has been going on for the past couple of weeks.  So far I have harvested all my spring plants including lettuce, radishes, and snow peas.  My radishes are all done along with my peas, and all that is left is my lettuce for now. (more…)

Getting the Most Lettuce Leaves Harvested

It was a busy day today with many transplants going into the garden including alyssum, amaranthus, calendula, marigolds, statice, cosmos, queen Anne’s lace, wildflowers, and even corn flowers.  I also had a busy day Thursday picking all the lettuce that I could. (more…)
