Pumpkins are Now Ready For Picking
Last updated onI thought I was going to wait until October to pick them off the ground and bring them in, but a couple of them looked like they were starting to rot and might not make it until next month. I had a couple that would have been find until next month, but I would rather pick them all at once.
A total of four pumpkins was harvested this afternoon and I look forward to using them by the end of October. This is why I grow pumpkins and is something I look forward to each and every season.
Here are the four pumpkins harvested just a few minutes ago.
As you can see they are about average sized pumpkins for a typical home garden. It is always good to get much bigger pumpkins, but I am not going to complain as long as I get pumpkins every year. Consistency is key when gardening organically.
I will most likely start cutting up the bad ones in a couple of days or so. I like to cut them up right away before they really start to decay at a fast rate and could wind up being no good.
In that case I will just chop it up and give it to my worms or use it for compost. Both methods are ideal and will be recycled back into the garden soil.
While I was outside I looked at some of my eggplants that were continuing to grow and noticed that they looked quite done. I was only going to pick two from one plant, but saw that another plant had a small one that looked ready as well.
These three will lead to another batch of eggplant parmesan which is probably the best meal that anyone can make out of these vegetables. I guess they could be used for salads, but they are not the best tasting vegetables that one could grow.
I think that the season for cucumbers is over because I happened to pick the last cucumber today. I am not sure if some of the healthier plant will be able to produce another cucumber, but right now I think that this one is the last for 2015.
Right now plants are starting to no longer produce and the weather is definitely getting cooler. This is bad for my summer plants, but it has been great for my fall crop which is loving the cooler weather.
I hope to get plenty of broccoli this season as long as they do not get infested with caterpillars or disease. My plants are doing well at the moment and I have placed mulch around all the plants and throughout the entire row in order to prevent weeds from growing. This mulch should last for the rest of the year.
